Brimmer and May students are writers. They write every day, and they do so with such frequency that over time their writing comes to define them as learners. In the Upper School this year seventeen of our students are enrolled in the Journalism elective. New teacher David Cutler teaches this course and will soon introduce the class to the School's first online digital publication. The students are excited!
Mr. Cutler, himself, is a journalist whose most recent article was released in this month's digital edition of The Atlantic. In this article, he argues that the comic book holds value in the classroom and writes rather convincingly why this genre can be an important teaching tool for educators.
Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Mr. Cutler is a graduate of Brimmer and May. Without question, writing our ideas and publishing them can carry risk. In fact, some may argue comic books hold no place in the classroom. If your student hesitates to write, I hope you will encourage him or her to take a risk and just write. Giving voice to an idea is sometimes the beginning of something new and important.
Sincerely,
Judy Guild

Middle School Notes
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As the colder weather is upon us, I ask that each Middle School student arrive at School with a jacket or sweatshirt that they can keep in their locker and use if they need to at recess or break. In addition, all students participating in athletics should have "warm attire" in their sports bags in case they need it during practices.
Activities/Clubs will begin on Monday, September 22, from 3:15 - 4:15 p.m. They are optional for students. Please check in with your child to see if he/she signed up for a Club/Activity. If a student does not want to do a Club/Activity, they are free to go home at 3:10 p.m.
A few reminders:
* Middle School Back-to-School Night is next Tuesday, September 23. The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. When you arrive, please pick up a folder on the front tables in the Dining Room and then proceed to the Theatre.
* There will be NO SCHOOL next Thursday, September 25, due to Rosh Hashanah.

PA News and Reminders
Parent Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer! In these first weeks of School, parent volunteers are already making a difference by greeting new families, planning events, sending emails to other parents in their grade, lending a hand at Lower School lunch, shelving books in the Library, and cheering on our Middle and Upper School athletes at fall sports games. If you signed up for an event, you will be contacted with more details next week. There's still time to sign up by clicking on the Sign-Up Genius.
Parent Website Primer
A huge thanks to Jen Kunkel and Jason Bock for leading the first Parent Technology Primer! There will be another session on Tuesday, September 23, at 6 p.m. in the Wright Conference Room (Chase Building, Lower level). Learn how to download a customized school calendar to your electronic devices, and ask questions about the electronic resources available at School, from eBackpack to iPads to the Brimmer and May website. Parents of all grades are encouraged to attend.

In anticipation of Spirit Day on October 17, we will be selling Brimmer and May Apparel on two days next week: Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Lower School, and Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 a.m. in the Dining Room. Click here to view the apparel and download an order form. Items are available in youth and adult sizes. Payment is by cash or check. Stop by our apparel table next week or drop your order form in the PA Mailbox (located in the Lower School lobby at 69 Middlesex) by September 27, and we'll have your Brimmer wear in time for Spirit Day!

Lower School catalogs will be sent home next Tuesday in your child's backpack. Middle School catalogs will be distributed at Back-to-School Night. Upper School catalogs will be distributed in students' mailboxes. Orders will be delivered to School by December 5. You can also order online--this is a convenient option for far-flung friends and family! Look for details in the Equal Exchange cover letter. If you have any questions, please contact Stella Lee at stella_o_lee@yahoo.com. Thank you for your support! Click here for the Equal Exchange fundraising letter and Order form.
