The school year is off to a great start! The students have returned ready to learn, and they are participating eagerly in the classroom lessons and activities. Even picture day was spectacular--the students and weather were both shining!
The weekly Bulletin will be longer than usual in September as we strive to communicate important dates and school-related details. Please read it carefully so your children are ready for each day.
The daily schedules and programs take a little time before they run smoothly for everyone, but within a week or two, most of the glitches should be resolved. If this does not happen for your child after two weeks, please alert your child's teacher or advisor. Areas of particular challenge this year include some lunch periods, and for the Middle and Upper Schools, the break period. We have made some changes to help these programs run a bit more smoothly.
I enjoyed speaking with many of you yesterday at the Upper School Back-to-School night, and I look forward to seeing our Lower School families next week. Families who are new to the Lower School are invited to join Mr. Fuller, Ms. McGillicuddy, and me at an informal breakfast at 8:00 on Thursday morning at my campus home. Our goal is to ensure you are navigating the new school year effectively and to get to know you better.
Sincerely,
Judy Guild

Kitchen News & Snack Information
The Kitchen is off to a great start this year, and we have been enjoying getting to know the new students. We served many favorite meals this week, including hamburgers made with locally-raised beef, breakfast for lunch, and today's antibiotic-free chicken tenders and baked sweet potato fries. The lunch menu can be found online in the Health and Wellness page of the School's website, and we encourage you to post it at home.
Middle and Upper School Snack
Each day, the Middle and Upper School students have a 15-minute break from 10:25-10:40 a.m. We sell a variety of homemade and packaged snacks during that time, ranging form $0.25-$1.50. However, as we adjust to the larger Middle and Upper School this year, we will be providing snack without charge during break for the next two weeks. This snack will vary each day, and will include a fruit and at least two other items.

Looking for Substitute Registered Nurses
I thought I would poll our own community first to see if there is anyone available to substitute for me on the rare occasion that I become ill or need to attend a professional development program off campus. This is not a volunteer position. You will be paid an hourly rate. The hours are 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Who wouldn't want to be surrounded by our wonderful children (and your own child, too!) for a day? If there is anyone out there with an interest and the availability, please let me know. I will provide an orientation to the wonderful world of school nursing at Brimmer and May!
Thanks for your consideration.

News from Lower School
Dear Lower School Families,
Today was a very exciting day for your children. They were placed in their Buddy Groups at Share. Students in grades 3 - 5 are the older Buddies for students in Pre-K - grade 2; Lower School teachers have Buddy Groups of eight to ten students. We will get into Buddy Groups for most of our Share assemblies, and of course we always enjoy our Buddy Apple Picking Trip (taking place on Friday, September 26)!
Speaking of the apple trip--if you have not returned the field trip permission form (available by clicking here), your child will not be able to go to the orchard. Ms. Beech sent home a form to families whose form was missing, so please return it as soon as possible. Also, do not forget to send in the transportation form.
Please join Ms. McGillicuddy and me on Monday in welcoming back Bridget Peberdy. Ms. Peberdy will again be greeting people in the foyer of McCoy.
We look forward to seeing you next week at Back-to-School Night. Please click here for information for grades 1-5, and click here for information for for Pre-K & K.
Best wishes,
Thomas Fuller Courtney P. McGillicuddy

Middle School Notes
Dear Parents and Guardians,
What a terrific beginning to the school year it has been. The trip to Camp Cedar was the perfect way to begin for both the new and returning students. The hallways are buzzing with excitement as the students continue to figure out the routine of the Middle School.
Below is some important information I thought would be beneficial for you to have:
* Next Friday night, September 19, the 7th and 8th graders will be having their first dance of the year with a live DJ. The time is from 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Being that we have a number of new students and many who have never attended a dance before, I have attached a few guidelines that will be helpful in terms of expectations for behavior and dress. There are 9 other school that are invited (Fessenden, Nobles, Park, Beaver, Meadowbrook, Deter, Southfield, DCD, and Rivers) which means that it could get crowded rather quickly. The dance will have 10 faculty chaperons, and will be well lit. Our goal is to provide a safe space for students to socialize and dance. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 617-278-2338.

Dance guidelines
* The school day ends at 3:10 p.m. on Mondays, which is the day Middle School does not participate in athletics. On Tuesday through Friday, the academic day ends at 2:30 p.m., at which point after-school sports begins. The ONLY exception to this is for those Middle School students who are playing on varsity teams. At 2:30 p.m. they are to attend study hall in the Almy Wing until 3:10 p.m., at which point they should then head off to sports. If they have an early release for a game on a particular day, they should then abide by the early release time.
* Clubs will start next week, and those students that sign up for clubs will attend them from 3:15-4:15 p.m. If students are involved in the play, rehearsal will be from 3:15-5:00 p.m. (unless otherwise specified by Mr. R.V.)
* Students who are not picked up from School after sports or who are waiting to be picked up from School after 3:10 p.m. on any day of week, must go and sign into AP, which is held in room 139. Students do not need to let anyone know that they plan to attend AP prior to showing up.
* 6th graders will be discussing and fine tuning their eBackpack experience this week during their Global Perspectives and Strategies class. Mr. Bock will be in attendance to help any student who is having trouble and reviewing log-ins and passwords.
* If a parent would like the full student experience on eBackpack, please ask your son/daughter for their log-in and password. The student portal provides more comprehensive material than the parent portal. For parents that would like access to the parent portal, you will be receiving your password at Back-to School night. If you would like it sooner than that, please email jbock@brimmer.org. Please see the eBackpack box on this week's Bulletin for details on usage.
* If there is any confusion regarding what supplies/materials students need for their class, students should just refer to what their individual teacher has asked them to have. Mr. Ferrara did send out a global list of supplies needed, but that is trumped by any individual teacher supply list.
* We would like students to have a heightened iPad experience. As such, we are researching planner apps on the iPad for students that would like another organizing tool. If a student would like to use a paper planner, they are more than welcome to do so. Study skills, organization, use of planner (electronic or other), etc. will be covered in the Global Perspectives and Strategies class.

Middle School Head

All students in grades 10 and 11 will take the PSATs on Wednesday, October 15, at Brimmer and May. Students will pre-register at School, and the cost of $14.00 will be billed home to parents and guardians. An information booklet about the PSAT which includes a description of the test as well as sample exam questions was placed in the School mailbox of every student in grades 10 and 11 last week while they were at camp. Please ask your child to share this information with you and urge her/him to utilize the practice questions. Further information will be mailed home. The results of the PSAT are sent to schools in December.

U.S. Musical Theater Class
This fall, a new class on musical theater is being offered in the Upper School. To begin the course, we learned a dance combination from the Broadway musical Newsies. Christopher Gattelli, the Tony-awarding winning choreographer of the show, released a tutorial video through Disney Theatrical Productions' new wellness and fitness program "Get Up and Go." Similar to First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, the program promotes fun ways kids can lead healthier lifestyles through dance. The 18 students in the course had a blast learning the dance. Want to join in on the fun? Click here for a link to the tutorial.
Enjoy, and get up and go!
