3.) Right Wing Watch: The Traditional Values Coalition And AB 1266
The Traditional Values Coalition And AB 1266
by Autumn Sandeen, October 23, 2013, The TransAdvocate

Ben Lopez of the Traditional Values Coalition (TVC) testified against California's Success and Opportunity Act at the State Senate Education Committee hearing on June 12, 2013.

An excerpt from his testimony:

"This bill would call for any student and young adult who perceives themselves to be something other than their sex at birth to share shower facilities, restrooms, locker rooms with gender or sex they feel they are at any given time.

"The problem is that this bill, or current law for that matter, affords a clear definition as to what constitutes legitimate gender identity and gender expression. The bill opens up Pandora's box, in effect, that creates a slippery slope that allows anyone to claim they are something sexually and then have full access to the opposite sex facilities without regard to privacy.

"We feel this is an absurd and offensive policy that would not bode well with the majority of students."

The TVC didn't just limit their speaking out against AB 1266 to their testimony before the Senate Education Committee. Louis Sheldon, the founder of TVC, spoke of the bill in TVC's online statement TVC Condemns Gov. Brown's Signing of Transgender Bathroom & Shower Bill for California Schools.

"The absurd and unthinkable will become reality thanks to Governor Jerry Brown signing the transgender and cross-dressing bathroom and shower bill into law [August 12th, 2013]. ..."

4.) Event: Register now for Mix It Up at Lunch Day which is October 29thh
Register now for Mix It Up at Lunch Day which is October 29th

Mix It Up at Lunch Day is just one week away! If you're planning to participate this year, now is the time to make it official. Take a few moments, register your school, and join nearly 6,000 others in the national Mix community!

Just what is Mix It Up at Lunch Day?

A national campaign launched by Teaching Tolerance a decade ago, Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries.

In our surveys, students have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions are most clearly drawn. So on one day - October 29 this school year - we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It's a simple act with profound implications. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away.

Resources
Mix It Up offers an array of free online resources designed to help school groups and classroom teachers explore the issue of social boundaries. These activities can be used as ice-breakers during the planning process, to get the group geared up for the event; or they can be used as classroom activities by teacher allies seeking to support the Mix It Up effort.
