3.) GLSEN Safe Schools Advocacy Summit (March 2-5; Washington, D.C)

Do you want to help create safe schools across the nation? Do you want to learn how to be an effective advocate for the issues you care about? Then you should apply for the Safe Schools Advocacy Summit (SSAS) today! For selected participants, SSAS is a completely free annual four-day advocacy conference in Washington, D.C. for students and non-students alike. SSAS will be held March 2nd-5th, 2013. Participants learn about issues surrounding bullying and harassment as well as current efforts to address the problem. Participants also learn about effective advocacy strategy. After learning how to advocate, attendees spend the final day of the program visiting with their Members of Congress to share their stories and press for key pieces of federal legislation to address bullying and harassment. Participants remain connected with GLSEN after the event and participate in ongoing policy actions throughout the year.

SSAS participants are chosen from a nationwide pool of applicants with increased consideration given to applicants from key legislative districts or states; however, regardless of where you live, anyone interested in the conference is encouraged to apply. GLSEN covers the entire cost of the conference, including participants' travel, accommodation, and meals.

Applications to SSAS must be received by 12:00 noon on January 28, 2013

The conference is completely free for all selected participants and will take place March 2nd-5th, 2013. Click here to apply!

4.) True Colors Conference (March 21-23; Storrs, CT)

In case you haven't heard, True Colors is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year.  On Thursday, March 21, 2013, we are offering a Best Practices Institute for Professionals only.  This year's Opening Plenary will be presented by Dr. Caitlin Ryan, entitled: An Evidenced Based Model of Wellness, Prevention and Care for LGBT Children and Adolescents.  The afternoon workshop sessions offer 8 choices. On Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23, 2013, the conference is open to everyone and offers an enormous variety of workshops (over 200 selections).  For some teens, this is the first opportunity that they have to meet other gay kids and finally realize that they are not alone.  This conference is for and about youth and the workshops are geared toward assisting these adolescents with questions surrounding their LGBTQI issues.  We also have numerous workshops specifically designed for child care professionals, counselors, social workers, clinicians and teachers.  These workshops provide an opportunity to network and collaborate on new projects and see how other states are successfully implementing LGBT friendly programs, or how they are keeping all their students safe. For more information click here.
