Preparing for the Nor'Easter
After the devastating affects of Hurricane Sandy, it is hard to believe we are preparing for yet another major storm system. A nor'easter is predicted to hit tomorrow, promising colder temperatures, heavy winds and the threat of rain AND snow. This could lead to increased flooding, power outages and seriously dangerous living conditions. Here are some tips on how to stay warm, safe and prepared for riding out this second storm:
- Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other such device inside your home or enclosed area. Locate the unit away from doors, windows and vents so carbon monoxide does not come indoors.
- Do not use gas appliances such as ranges, ovens or dryers to heat your home.
- Make sure you have plenty of coats, gloves, hats and extra blankets to stay warm.
- Go to a designated public shelter if your home is without power or heat. Here is a list of shelters and warming stations in NJ: Shelters
- If possible, fill your gas tank.
- Make sure your generator is running properly.
- Clear all drains and gutters of leaves, sticks and general debris to avoid flooding.
- Secure all loose items from your lawn, ie: bring in garbage cans and tie down patio furniture.
- Make sure your cell phone is fully charged.
- Set refrigerator controls to the coldest settings.
- Stock up on bottled water and non-perishable food items.
- Get cash in case of an emergency.
- Make sure batteries are still working in your radio.

Reporting Damage
If there is damage to your home, property or vehicle, the first thing to do is take plenty of pictures - to document exactly what happened. Once you've taken pictures, then it is time to fix the problem so you don't incur anymore damages!
