One thing I struggle with from time to time is my identity. The bohemian, barefoot walking, hippy mama vs. the lady who likes a nice Louboutin, high thread count cotton sheets, and an afternoon walking along the Seine. These two personas sometimes duke it out inside my head until I escape them both with Kundalini or a hike in the hills.
This week the two worlds collided on The Local Rose. My earthy self finally had the ads taken down from the home page (did you notice?) since they really didn't exemplify the philosophy of TLR. My chic self had a glamorous day of playing dressing up with Kelly Framel from The Glamourai and attending a dinner for Mulberry. The two joined forces when I got to co-host an event for one of my heroes Vandana Shiva. I had the honor of picking Vandana Shiva up from the airport and chauffeuring her to Axe restaurant where we were holding the benefit. I was so nervous, feeling as if I was picking up the Dalai Lama. The whole day worked out beautifully and Vandana was as effective as ever. The first thing she said to me as I carried her three heavy suitcases to the car (who knew Saris are heavy?) was that we are fighting a war. Yes it is like a war since it is a question of life and death. 275,000 farmers have committed suicide in India due to corporations like Monsanto patenting seeds. Just the idea of placing a patent on seeds seems preposterous. But then again there was a time when Native Americans said "how can you buy or sell water, air, or land?" It is a question of life and death since GMO foods have also been sprayed with pesticides that are linked to agent orange. So many of us are asleep on this matter and it is time to realize the truth. The corporations will poison us without mercy to make a dollar. This is a war. A war for food freedom that is about the right to have access to pure, non toxic food that won't give us cancer, allergies, or diabetes.
