There's a story in my family about how many moons ago, when my parents were still wed and I was a wee one, there was a cricket chirping away into the night. My father hunted the cricket all through the house, and my mother pleaded with him saying it was bad luck to kill a cricket. My grandmother had grown up in a hotel in San Francisco and the folks who worked at the hotel in those days were mostly Chinese, so the Chinese superstitions were assimilated into my Persian/Irish household. My father being the alpha driven male that he was, paid no heed to Chinese superstition and squashed the cricket. He went to sleep peacefully that night. The next night however, he was woken up by a cacophony of chirping. It seems that one cricket was a mama and had laid eggs around the house. So I have that story ingrained in my DNA, and that is why I a now living in the land of crickets. I certainly cannot kill them and every time I catch one to put outside, another one appears in its spot. They are everywhere! I see them hopping in the kitchen, dinning room, and the garage seems to be their Disney Hall with a full blown orchestra playing at all hours. Fig our cat is in feline heaven, Colette my older daughter is horrified while Charlotte my younger has named them all and wants to dress them up. Perhaps they are singing about the auspicious time we are in. In a few days 12.12.12. will be upon us and never will we see the same date lined up like that in our lifetime. The Mayans, Incas, Buddhists prophesize the end of things as we know it to be happening 12.21.12. I believe it is just an awakening to a new way of life. !2.12.12. is a good time to make affirmations for what we would like to see in our future. The Winter solstice will also be on 12.21.12 so these are the last days of autumn. Perhaps these ending to seasons prepare us for the grand ending that awaits us all. Death is inevitable and none of us will escape it. Time to enjoy every moment for they are all ephemeral, not unlike a crickets life span.
