Historic Family Ranch Daytrip, April Eleven Roses Ranch Lupins

Take a step back in time and enjoy the rich history of life from the 1800s to present day. Embark upon a mule drawn wagon tour featuring breathtaking wildflowers, followed by a mouth-watering chuck wagon barbecue, including complimentary Lake County wines. Eleven Roses Ranch has been offering agri-tours since 1999 and the ranch, which is still a working cattle and hay ranch, has been in the family since 1883.

First, listen as Anne shares her heritage and family history, and the life she has built with Eleven Roses Ranch. Next, embark upon a 1-1/2 hour narrated, mule-drawn wagon tour, with some optional walking. Get out amongst the wildflowers for the best photo opportunities; the rich textures of the rugged mountains and the valley floor make picture taking a must. Look for a myriad of birds, golden eagles, deer, squirrels, rabbits, wild turkeys, and the occasional bear.

Tours are by reservation only and are offered starting in April, when the wildflowers bloom. Public tours are limited to no more than 20 people to allow for an intimate family atmosphere.

Noggle Vineyards, Clearlake Oaks     Noggle Vineyards

Noggle Vineyards and Winery is a family-owned boutique winery in the secluded Old Long Valley region of the Lake County appellation. The six acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard sits on a 1,500 foot bench below Round Mountain and above the North Fork of Cache Creek. A combination of mineral rich soil and hot summer temperatures with breezy, cool nights promotes a slow, even ripening of the grapes.

Michael Noggle is an award-winning winemaker with over 30 years experience in growing grapes and making wines. He brings the fruit forward drama of the hot mountain landscape and crystal blue skies into the bottle. The result in the glass is a beautiful bouquet of deep berry, black cherry, and chocolate in a structured and balanced wine with a lingering silky finish.

Open weekends 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment.

Roasted Butternut Squash Soup

Contributed by: Six Sigma Winery

1 Lake County butternut squash

1-2 tbsp butter

1/2 cup minced shallots

3-4 cups vegetable or chicken broth

2 tsp salt

pepper, freshly ground

1/2 cup cream (optional)

fresh Lake County sage for decoration

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Split the butternut squash in half, remove the seeds, and place meat-side down in a baking dish. Bake in the oven for 45-60 minutes. Remove baking dish and increase temperature to 450 degrees. Cool the squash and remove the peel. Cut squash into smaller pieces, return to baking dish, and roast for 10-15 minutes, allowing the squash pieces to brown but not to burn. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. When it starts foaming, add the shallots and reduce the heat, allowing the shallots to become translucent (about 8-10 minutes). Add the squash and the broth. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes. Use a hand blender to puree it all. Add salt and pepper to taste. Decorate with chopped sage. Serves four.

Optional: Add cream at the end for a richer soup.
