9th Annual Community Schools Forum

November 14-15, 2013

Hilton Naperville / Lisle

Mark your calendars now for November 15, 2013, the date of this year's 9th Annual Illinois Community Schools Forum

We're grateful to have the support of several Federation members that have volunteered their time to help us plan another exciting community schools Forum.  This year's event will feature, among other things: workshops highlighting community school best practices from around the country;
2nd annual Community School Leadership Awards; an inspiring keynote; opportunities for networking with your peers; and a half-day pre-Forum seminar on November 14, 2013.

Even if you are not a member of the Forum Planning Committee, you can still provide us with input on what you'd like to see us offer this year.  Please email Havilah if you have any ideas for:
  • Inspiring and informative keynote speakers
  • Workshop topics and / or presenters
  • Suggestions or improvements you have for making this year's event bigger and better than last year's Forum!

We'd love to hear from you, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any ideas about this year's Forum.  We look forward to seeing you on November 14th and 15th!

Financial Aid Train-the-Trainer Sessions

May 20-21, Chicago, IL

As part of a national initiative to increase financial aid awareness, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) in collaboration with the City Colleges of Chicago is hosting Financial Aid Train-the-Trainer sessions in Chicago, May 20-21. The trainings support organizations that help -- or want to help -- students plan, prepare and pay for their postsecondary educations.

The three upcoming sessions include a Financial Aid Roundtable aimed at providing ED's latest tools and resources, as well as an opportunity for organizational leaders to discuss their best practices for building financial aid awareness throughout the Chicagoland area. The two other sessions will each provide a financial aid Train-the-Trainer presentation followed by a walkthrough of the federal application known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The idea is to train organizational representatives so that they can provide that same information to their members.

All events are free; however, space is limited and pre-registration is required!  Click here for a list of the training dates, times, and locations.  You must RSVP by email or phone at 312-730-1547 by May 17, 2013.

Funding Opportunities for Community Schools

Public Safety Action Committee Grants

This summer, the Public Safety Action Committee (PSAC) will award up to $2 million to support proven programs that provide mentoring and enrichment to Chicago youth at risk of being involved in violence. The PSAC will take a results-oriented approach, measuring the effectiveness of each program. This summer, the Committee will support programs for youth at the greatest risk of violence and expects to see the following outcomes:

  • Decreased rate of arrest for violent crimes
  • Increased engagement with school or GED
  • Enhanced employability or life skills.

The Committee will award grants in four program areas (see RFP for more detail):

  1. Jobs + SEL
  2. Mentoring + Wraparound Services
  3. Case Management + SEL
  4. Community Re-Grant Program

For programs 1, 2, and 3, only existing, evidence-based programs will be considered for funding. Grants will range from $25,000 to $500,000. These funds cannot be used to replace other existing funding; they must be used to expand services and serve a greater number of youth.

The deadline for applying is Monday, May 6. Visit PSAC's website for more information and to apply online.

Voice Not Violence Campaign
Through its Voice Not Violence initiative the African American Legacy (AAL) will award annual grants of up to $40,000, renewable for up to three years, to six organizations working to provide conflict resolution training for youth; develop youth leaders in anti-violence efforts; cultivate juvenile justice-related organizing or advocacy work by youth; support anti-violence writing, public speaking, filmmaking, and other cultural productions by young people; reduce trauma through therapy or group discussion; and/or convene peace circles or develop restorative justice programs. Priority will be given to organizations serving youth between the ages of 10 and 14.

The application deadline is May 24, 2013. Click here for more information and a link to the RFP.
3rd Annual STEAM Student Conference
May 11, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Alumni Hall @ NEIU, Chicago

The Upward Bound Math and Science program, in collaboration and sponsorship from the Chicago Teachers' Center and Northeastern Illinois University, and Columbia College Department of Science and Mathematics will like to invite you to their 3rd Annual S.T.E.A.M. Student Conference: Innovation.

The S.T.E.A.M. Student Conference is a FREE conference for middle and high school students that fosters Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Mathematics (STEAM) skills through project-based learning and career-oriented workshop sessions.  Students will participate in hands-on workshops exploring different STEAM related topics including video game design, computer aided design and architecture, scientific investigations, robotics, and media editing, among others.  This is a great opportunity for community schools to provide expanded learning opportunities for students and to foster their interests in the STEAM disciplines through fun and interactive learning.

When attending you may even recognize one of the event organizers as none other than longtime community school supporter and 2012 Community School Leadership Award Winner, Marcelo Caplan, associate professor at Columbia College Chicago.
