Ensure Students Have Access to Free Meals This Summer

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is spreading the word about free, nutritious meals and snacks available to children this summer at more than 1,600 summer food service program sites across the state.

School districts, local governments and non-profits can all sponsor summer food sites, which may include schools, parks, recreation centers, and others. Schools may also help sponsors get the word out to students and the community about available programs. Most summer food program sites are open to all children in the community; however, some sites just serve meals to those children enrolled in a specific program.  Sponsors may submit their online applications to ISBE from March 4 - June 15.

Summer food programs work by providing free meals and snacks to low-income children through age 18 when school is not in session. Individuals age 18 through 21 who are enrolled in school programs for persons with disabilities and have an IEP on file may also participate. Sites must be located in areas where at least 50 percent of the children are eligible for free and reduced meals or the family's income is 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

You can also find information about summer meals sites close to you by contacting the Illinois Hunger Coalition's Hunger Hotline at 1-800-359-2163.  The hotline is available in both English and Spanish, M-F, from 9-5p. Summer meal sites can also be found here.

Parent Engagement Webinar Featuring Telpochcalli Community School

Did you miss Tuesday's webinar featuring Telpochcalli Community School?  Well you're in luck.  Justice Matters, host of this Schools That Rock webinar series, has posted this webinar here

Telpochcalli Community Education Project (TCEP) is housed within Telpochcalli school, providing a space for building trust and connection and empowering families to be a collective force for positive change in their communities. In addition, TCEP provides services including, life skills, job training, advocacy training, aerobics, English Language Learning and computer training. The center, coupled with the school's racial justice educational approach, makes the school a hub for community trust and support; breaking down the walls too often established between families, students, community and school.

Health In Mind: Improving Education Through Wellness

The Healthy Schools Campaign (HSC) and Trust for America's Health (TFAH) recently released a new report, Health in Mind: Improving Education Through Wellness,that details immediate solutions to help close the achievement gap and create a healthy future for all children.

American children are struggling academically and the nation faces a growing achievement gap that is increasingly tied to health disparities: today's children could become the first generation to live shorter and less healthy lives than their parents.

Health in Mind presents research, policy analysis and immediate recommendations focused on:

  • Preparing teachers and principals to promote student health and wellness;
  • Engaging parents in school health;
  • Incorporating health and wellness into school metrics, accountability and recognition programs;
  • Building the Department of Education's capacity to address student health and wellness; and
  • Placing a school nurse in every school.

On March 21 from 12:00pm - 1:00pm, HSC will also present a webinar focused on Health in Mind.  Webinar speakers include Professor Charles Basch of Columbia Teachers College, whose research on the educational impact of health disparities provided a strong basis for this effort.
