Broadening Parental Engagement:
Valuing, Strengthening and Empowering Communities of Color
Webinar: Tuesday, February 19th
3:30pm - 4:30pm (Central)
Parental engagement and involvement has traditionally been narrowly viewed as parent volunteer hours served or PTA participation. This webinar turns that idea on its head! What does parental engagement look like when it's centered on supporting and valuing the experiences of families and communities of color? What does parental engagement look like when it brings community into schools? What does parental engagement look like with empowerment and social justice at its center?
As a part of their Schools that Rock series, this Justice for Education Network webinar will feature the impactful approach of Telpochcalli Community School in Chicago, IL and the parental engagement strategies they employ through their Telpochcalli Community Education Project (TCEP). TCEP is housed within the school providing a space for building trust and connection and empowering families to be a collective force for positive change in their communities. In addition, TCEP provides services including, life skills, job training, advocacy training, aerobics, English Language Learning and computer training. The center, coupled with the school's racial justice educational approach, makes the school a hub for community trust and support; breaking down the walls too often established between families, students, community and school.
Register for this webinar here. For more information, please visit Justice Matters on-line.

February 15th is "Illinois 5Essentials Day"
As you know, Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recently joined the UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago Urban Education Institute to help the state's nearly 4,000 schools better identify their strengths and areas needing improvement, particularly related to leadership, family involvement, school environment, collaboration, and instruction. The school-level reports generated by data collected on the 5Essentials Survey has been critical to helping schools target resources and make decisions that help accelerate learning and test score gains.
To ensure schools are able to take advantage of this valuable resource, Gov. Quinn has declared this Friday, February 15 as "lllinois 5Essentials Day" and is encouraging teachers and students allocate 15 minutes to complete the 5Essentials Survey online. At least 50% of students and teachers at each school must complete the survey in order for ISBE to have enough data to generate a school-level report.
Click here for more information and to complete the survey.
