Help Us Enhance Our Professional Development Offerings

This year, the Federation for Community Schools will expand its professional development offerings to include peer-to-peer learning and training. This will include engaging members to share their expertise in implementing the community school model with colleagues and partners, so we can all learn from each other's strengths in community school implementation. We will also engage partners with areas of expertise that can help enhance community school implementation, like parent engagement or health and wellness.

As such, we're asking you all to complete this survey to let us know what areas of community school implementation you would like to learn more about, as well as areas of strength in your work that you'd like to share with colleagues. We also would like to gather information about people from whom you'd like to learn - an expert in the field, a colleague with a particular area of strength, etc.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your feedback.

Give the Gift of Good Attendance!

A guide to messaging attendance in the holiday season

With winter break just around the corner, Attendance Works has developed talking points and sample messages for school leaders hoping to encourage good attendance. Absences spike in the weeks before and after winter break, as families try to squeeze in a few more vacation days. To break this cycle:

  • Emphasize the talking points in conversations and interactions with families and students
  • Record public service announcement or robo-calls
  • Send emails or flyers out to families in early December
  • Offer incentives tailored for the holiday

Above all, remind parents that the best gift they can give their children this year, and every year, is a good education.

High School Resource Coordinator Network

Earlier this year we launched the High School Resource Coordinator (HSRC) Network to provide high school resource coordinators with the opportunity to come together regularly to support each other's work and to learn from each other.  We all recognize that high school students have different developmental needs than elementary school students.  Programs and services that engage high school students have to interest and challenge them, engage them as leaders and meet the expectations of these young adults.  We also know that engaging administrators, parents, and community members in support of a high school community school is very different than undertaking this work at the elementary school level.  It was with these differences in mind that we launched the HSRC Network to support the unique work it takes to implement the community school model in a high school.

If you are a high school resource coordinator and were not able to attend our first meeting, we invite you to attend our next meeting.  This meeting will be held on Friday, December 14 from 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm at Robeson High School - located at 6835 S. Normal Blvd., Chicago, IL.  As always, lunch will be provided.  To register or to learn more about the HSRC Network please contact Melissa Mitchell.

If you are a RC working in an elementary school, please see our Upcoming Events (at left) for information about our next Resource Coordinator Luncheon.  Please note that the RC Luncheons and HSRC Network meetings are for resource coordinators ONLY.
