Sycamore Community Agencies Partner with School District to Improve Education
Last week, the Daily Chronicle, which is published in DeKalb Illinois, featured an article about the deepening partnership between District 427 and community agencies. The article highlights the ways in which Sycamore Community School District 427 has made education a "community effort" and the formalizing of a community-level collaboration that connects schools and partners in a systemic way. By connecting with area agencies, schools are able to offer an array of services, like mental health counseling, during the day and extended learning opportunities after school. Community partnerships have also enhanced their Parent University, which relies on community experts to provide training to parents on a variety of topics that help them support their children -- including parenting skills, child development, and planning for college.
District and agency leadership recognize these types of community school partnerships as a win-win. Schools are able to leverage existing community resources to provide vital services and programs for their students and families, while agencies are better able to access students and families and fulfill their missions. We're happy to see school district and community agency leaders being recognized for working together to support student success in Sycamore. And thanks to Tony Stahl (Federation PAC member and director of community schools for the Sycamore School District) and Kathy Countryman (Federation Board member and district superintendent) for sharing this article with us.

General Mills Foundation Accepting Applications for Champions for Healthy Kids
The General Mills Foundation, in partnership with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, is inviting nonprofit organizations in the United States working to improve youth nutrition and physical fitness behaviors to apply for the Champions for Healthy Kids program. The program will award fifty grants of $10,000 to community-based groups such as health departments, government agencies, schools, and Native American Tribes that develop creative ways to help youth adopt a balanced diet and physically active lifestyle. To ensure that the nutrition information in the proposed program is accurate and is scientifically based, a registered dietitian must either be directly involved or serve as an adviser to the program. Project periods can vary depending on program and setting. However, the project should be completed within twelve months. One-day/one-time events will not be funded. Visit the General Mills Web site for complete program guidelines, an FAQ, and the online application. Applications are due December 3. |
