Time of the Essence for Long-Term Northern Plan

The news surrounding the closure of the Port of Churchill and the impending layoffs of ten per cent of the community's workforce is renewing our calls for a long-term solution for Northern Manitoba.

The Manitoba Chambers of Commerce were quick to add our support for the community of Churchill and workers impacted by the decision. If you missed our release, you can read it by clicking here. The Chambers reaction and calls for action were also covered by the media.

Silence deafening as Churchill shutdown shock spreads - Winnipeg Free Press

Heading into the long weekend, MCC had a chance to meet with government officials to discuss future involvement in Northern economic development conversations. We have also been in contact with the Chamber in Churchill, their Mayor, and town administrators to assess the impact and see what role the Chamber network can have. We will continue to add our voice and support to help Churchill and Northern Manitoba. The success and growth of the North remains critical to our provincial growth.
MCC Makes Most of Seat at Labour Market Consultations

A busy few weeks of Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (MCC) involvement in government led roundtables continued last week in Winnipeg.

Our Chamber was proud to be one of the lead partners with the Minister of Education, Ian Wishart, for labour market discussions surrounding flexible, responsive, and emerging labour markets in our province and across Canada. The roundtable was held to prepare for the near $75 million in annual federal training dollars.

The gathering of more than 90 representatives from Manitoba's workforce and organizations was the first of four to be held across Manitoba. Future roundtables are planned in Thompson, Portage la Prairie, and Brandon. You can read more about the Winnipeg session with comments from MCC President Chuck Davidson by clicking here.

Adding the Chamber Voice

As mentioned in the above story, the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (MCC) recently participated in two federal roundtables on future immigration and employment insurance service changes the feds are looking at.

These forums allowed MCC to share our policy with federal representatives and to add our voice to the process. The opportunity also exists for our local Chambers to bring specific challenges to the attention to the government before any changes are discussed and eventually implemented.

If your Chamber would like to add your comments to the immigration discussions, please click here. The deadline for online submissions is August 5, 2016. Comments regarding changes to employment insurance services will be accepted until August 31, 2016. You can add your opinions by clicking here.

Is it Time to Rethink Our Approach to Trade?

In there latest edition of 5 Minutes for Business, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce is looking at the numbers behind the rhetoric on trade.

The overarching theme at the recent Republican convention was one of anger at an economy that is supposedly "not working." Donald Trump's biggest applause even came when he slammed trade and immigration.

And yet this is not just an American phenomenon. These themes would have been familiar to the British who voted for the Brexit or in France, Austria, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden where extreme-right parties are leading in the polls. So why are voters so angry? Have trade and globalization gone too far?
