UPCOMING EVENT!
Winter's Lace:
The Art of Shetland Knitting
February 22, 2015
1 - 3:30 p.m.
Avery Carriage House
Join us for tea & scones and a talk about the lace knitting tradition of the Shetland Islands. Tour the Avery House and view wonderful examples of this unique art form. We invite you to hear the story about this special place and its influence on the world.
The Shetland Islands are the only place in the British Isles where domestic hand-knitting has thrived continuously from the seventh century to the present day. Early crofters traded socks to Dutch merchants, and their patterns spread to other countries bordering on the northern seas. Thanks to Queen Victoria the world beyond came to know and love their beautiful lace shawls. The success of their products also depended upon the special qualities of the Shetland sheep.
Purchase your tickets now! Seating is limited.
