Thanks to recent graduate Manako Yabe, MSW '13, USC's 2013 commencement included captioning on all Jumbotrons. Yabe advocated for her fellow deaf and hard-of-hearing students by convincing commencement organizers to make this relatively simple fix that benefited many of the event's attendees. In fact, universal design, the concept of designing environments and products with maximum accessibility, has been a focus of Yabe's studies. "Being deaf in a community that is hearing, I'm looking for something we can share," she said. "That's where universal design comes in. I also want to empower not only individuals who are deaf but hearing." Read more

An anonymous donor has pledged $1 million to the USC School of Social Work to establish the Cleofas and Victor Ramirez Professor of Practice, Policy, Research and Advocacy for the Latino Population. The gift bolsters the school's commitment to advancing scholarship that supports the Latino community, promotes informed policymaking, attracts pre-eminent faculty, and draws the best students. Assistant Professor Erick Guerrero has been awarded a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will affect substance abuse treatment programs serving racial and ethnic minorities. He is interested in how the ACA might improve the integration of substance abuse treatment, mental health care, and HIV prevention programs, as well as its effects on outcomes. Read more

Cause and effect is a theme that runs throughout "Therapy," a play written and directed by Jeff Bernhardt, MSW '94, that shows how the line between professional and personal issues can become blurry. "Oftentimes, the only experience people have with therapy is through the media, which doesn't show what it's really like to be a therapist or what issues come up," he said. Read more
