Lisa Breeding came to the Morehead SBDC to get assistance in putting together a business plan to obtain funding to open a clothing store. This had been an idea of her's for awhile. She came to the Morehead SBDC, to meet with Mark Murphy, consultant, and they began the process of gathering information for the business plan and projections. Lisa researched costs of inventory, shelving, location and the cost of installing tanning beds. Once she got the information to the consultant, he put the written material in business plan form, worked on a logo and put together three year projections with cash flow, break even and income statement. He also provided industry and census data for the plan.  They then reviewed the plan and completed the final copy.

She presented the plan to several lenders and ended up getting a Micro loan through the Pine Mountain Community Development Corp. She purchased inventory, remodeled the location, bought tanning beds and a POS system.
She opened her business and has had great success in obtaining customers and has been generating sales with social media.
Lisa commented, "the Small Business Development Center is a great place to get the help you need to open a business".
Murphy to receive 2013 Sutton Landry
State Star

Mark Murphy, Morehead State University Small Business Development Center's management consultant, has been selected as the 2013 Sutton Landry State Star of the Kentucky Small Business Development Center (KSBDC).  Becky Naugle, director of KSBDC, made the announcement.  "I am delighted to make this announcement, and to recognize Mark Murphy for his extraordinary contributions to the work of the KSBDC and small business in Kentucky," said Naugle.

Murphy has been with MSU since April 2010. Prior to that, he spent nine years as finance manager for a car dealership, four years as an indirect loan officer for a bank, and has owned two businesses.  He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in marketing from MSU and is working toward a master's degree in business administration. He is a two-time recipient of the KSBDC Million Dollar Loan Club.

The award is sponsored by America's Small Business Development Center Network, a partnership uniting private enterprise, government, higher education and local nonprofit economic development organizations. It is the Small Business Administration's largest partnership program, providing management and technical assistance to help Americans start, run and grow their own businesses. Each state designates an annual winner who is characterized as an exemplary performer, a significant contributor to the program and shows a strong commitment to small business. It is named after Landry, who served as director of Northern Kentucky University's SBDC for 17 years before his death.

Murphy will receive the award in conjunction with the Association of Small Business Development Center's (ASBDC) Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla., in September.
