SUCCESS STORY
Almeida Insurance Agency

In December 2012, Lee Almeida began pursuing his dream of business ownership and visited Kim Jenkins, management consultant at Morehead State University's Ashland Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Ashland SBDC has

been providing small business consulting services free-of-charge in downtown Ashland for nearly 30 years.

For the past 8 years, Almeida had sold insurance for large insurance companies. He had always dreamed of one day opening his own insurance agency. During his sessions with Jenkins, they discussed basic start-up issues such as license/permit requirements, types of business structures, start-up costs, income potential, and overhead expenses. Almeida then began the process of researching possible locations for his insurance agency.

In January 2013, he leased office space in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, installed signage, opened his agency, and began underwriting policies for American National Insurance Company.
"The Ashland SBDC services and its staff have been very helpful in the process of starting my business" said Almeida.

Almeida Insurance Agency began underwriting for American National Insurance in January 2013. Owner, Lee Almeida, says "we offer insurance policies for auto, home, classic cars, renters, life, health, disability, cancer, motorcycle, ATV, travel campers, and boats".  She has worked in the insurance industry since 2005, and his new independent agency is dedicated to serving the community's insurance needs. In fact, the agency remains open during the most common 12:00 noon - 1:00 PM lunch hour. Almeida said "my 8 years in the insurance industry taught me that many customers prefer to handle their insurance needs and make insurance premium payments during their lunch hour".

Almeida was born in Cuba, raised in New Jersey, and served as a Military Police Officer. During his stint in the military, he spent time in Korea, Germany, and Honduras. He has worked for the Federal Department of Corrections and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. His wife of 12 years, Cathy, is an assistant at Almeida Insurance. They live in Summit and have six children ranging in age from 9 to 21. They are members of the New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene in Cannonsburg.

Almeida Insurance is conveniently located at 10019 Mayo Trail Road in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, near the PNC Bank on US 23 in Catlettsburg. They are open Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM and close each day for lunch between 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM. For more information, call (606) 739-9373 or e-mail:

Is there really FREE money to open a business?

Uncovering the truth behind  the free money myth

SBA Logo It is not uncommon for potential business owners to call or visit the SBA asking for grants or free money to start their businesses. In many cases, you have likely read or heard the "free money myth" and how trouble-free it is to get your share, either from a late night infomercial or from an obscure publication.  In most cases, the information is incorrect and misleading. In other cases, it's close to a scam, so be leery of anyone who asks for money up front to get additional information that leads to free money.
