The Seventh Wish by Kate Messner
On the coldest day of winter, Charlie Brennan sees magical ice flowers on the lake near her house. While ice fishing with a friend, she catches a small fish that promises to grant a wish if she will release him. When her wish comes true, she returns to the ice to find the fish. Charlie makes more wishes to help others, but her wishes don't always turn out as she intended. On the date of this book's release last month, the author received a message letting her know she was no longer invited to a school visit that had been on her calendar, and it was because Charlie's older sister develops a heroin addiction during the course of the novel. Charlie wishes she could help her sister become healthy, but magical thinking cannot solve everything. Kate Messner offers upper elementary and middle school readers a thoughtful introduction to addiction in this gentle story of coping and bravery.
