Wednesday, March 23 - Saint Mazie by Jami Attenberg
Meet Mazie Phillips: big-hearted and bawdy, she's the truth-telling proprietress of The Venice, the famed New York City movie theater. It's the Jazz Age, with romance and booze aplenty--even when Prohibition kicks in--and Mazie never turns down a night on the town. But her high spirits mask a childhood rooted in poverty, and her diary, always close at hand, holds her dearest secrets. Then, more than ninety years after Mazie began her diary, it's discovered by a documentarian in search of a good story. Who was Mazie Phillips, really? A chorus of voices from the past and present fill in some of the mysterious blanks on her adventurous life. Inspired by the life of a woman who was profiled in Joseph Mitchell's classic Up in the Old Hotel, SAINT MAZIE is infused with Jami Attenberg's signature wit, bravery, and heart. Mazie's rise to "sainthood"--and her irrepressible spirit--is unforgettable.
Limited dinner menu and drinks will be available to purchase.

If our copies are checked out, request via the Marina inter-library loan system.

Afternoon Book Discussion - A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
Thursday, March 3 at 1:00 p.m.
Stretching from Georgia to Maine, the Appalachian Trail offers some of America's most breathtaking scenery. After living for many years in England, Bill Bryson moved back to the United States and decided to reacquaint himself with his country by taking to this uninterrupted "hiker's highway." Before long, Bryson and his infamous walking companion, Stephen Katz, are stocking up on insulated long johns, noodles and manuals for avoiding bear attacks as they prepare to set off on a walk that is both amusingly ill-conceived and surprisingly adventurous. Join us to discuss a book that is an American classic and has been made into a highly entertaining movie.

What Staff are Reading

Ann just finished listening to...

Christmas on Mill Street by Joseph Walker

Reminiscent of the holiday classic movie a Christmas Story, Christmas on Mill Street is as exhilarating as a downhill ride on a flexible flyer sled. Fidel Castro and the fact that nine year old Sam Andrews just moved from Arizona and has never seen snow do not keep him from boasting he will make the treacherous run down Mill Street. This was a laugh out loud funny audio book.
