Mother Goose on the Loose
Fridays, July 10 through July 24
For ages 3 - 36 months
Nursery rhymes, songs, movement, puppets and stories followed by playtime.

Story Time
Thursdays, July 16 through 23 at 10:30 a.m.
For ages 2 to 5
Stories, songs, rhymes and movement followed by a craft. Sing, write, play, talk and read about a different theme every week.
 
Superheroes and Sidekicks
Friday, July 10 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.
For ages 7 - 10
Physical, speed and trivia challenges for you and your sidekick. Led by Linda Kohler. Registration is required by using the events calendar.

LEGO Mania
Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m.
For grades preK - 8
Drop in to use the library's LEGO collection to build your own creations! 

Community Heroes Club
Mondays, July 13 & 20 at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday, July 30 at 1:30 p.m.
For grades 1 - 5
We will meet to discuss people who support our community through their work and dedication, such as first responders, volunteers and our veterans and/or current serving military members (July 13). We will create showcase pieces (July 20) and invite our heroes in for a presentation and thank you tea (July 30) with light snack served for our heroes and club members. Led by Colleen Sedora. Registration required for each day using the events calendar.


Rock'n Roll Hero: Elvis Presley
Tuesday, July 14 at 10:30 a.m.
For ages 3 - 12
Color a velvet art poster with markers while listening to music by Elvis Presley, the king of rock'n roll.

Animal Heroes: Kitten Rescue 
Wednesday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m.
For ages 4 - 8
Listen to a story of a real life kitten rescue, then rescue "kittens" around the library. Don a firefighter's hat and rescue a plush kitten from a "tree" and keep the kitten as our thanks for being an animal hero. 

You "Can" Make Salsa 
Thursday, July 16 at 2:30 p.m.
For grades 5 - 9
  
Do you know what's in your canned food? There's more corn in food and non-food items than you might think. We'll learn more about nutritional labels (sodium content, sugar, protein, etc.) as we make salsa using four different canned goods, plus cheese. Corn chips provided.

Superhero Photo Booth
Friday, July 17 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
For ALL AGES
Drop in to take your picture in our superhero photo booth and make a superhero craft. 

Heroes of Our National Parks
Monday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m.
For ages 4 - 8
Celebrate the creation of our National Park system with a story about Theodore Roosevelt and John Muir around our "campfire", craft your own toy binoculars, make a bird feeder and mix up s'mores to go.

GlaxoSmithKline Science in the Summer
Tuesday, July 21 and Wednesday, July 22
Grades 2 - 3 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Grades 4 - 6 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
GSK Science in the Summer will introduce students to physical science and electricity through interesting investigations that help them to understand how magnets work and what makes electricity. Sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline in partnership with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and taught by QACPS teacher Stephanie Wishart. Parent or guardian must complete a form to register children for this 2-day mini camp.

Sciencetellers: Superheroes
Thursday, July 23 at 2:30 p.m.
For grades K - 5
Throw on your lab coat and get ready to experience forces and reactions through several exciting, hands-on experiments that will have you laughing, learning and having fun! Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Book Discussion - The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

In the spirit of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Gabrielle Zevin's enchanting novel is a love letter to the world of books--and booksellers--that changes our lives by giving us the stories that open our hearts and enlighten our minds. Get Library E-Books for your e-Ink Kindle

Tuesday, July 28 at 6:00 p.m.

This is a hands-on workshop for people who own an e-ink Kindle such as a Paperwhite or an older version. If your screen looks like a book, not a computer screen and you can't read it in the dark, then this class is for you. Learn how to sign into Maryland's E-Library Digital Consortium, checkout a book and transfer it to your device. Please bring your kindle and your login information for your Amazon Account (including password). Space is limited so sign up now using the events calendar.  

 

Local Author Reading and Book Signing

Thursday, July 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Local authors and members of the Eastern Shore Writers Association, Nick Hoxter, Kenton Kilgore, Mark Lidinsky and Brent Lewis will read from their books. The works being showcased all involve or are set on Kent Island.

Daughters of the American Revolution

Laurie Burke Shaw and Sue Brenchley of the General Perry Benson Chapter of the NSDAR will present a workshop at the Kent Island Library for anyone who might be a prospective member.  They will follow up this workshop with discussion at the regular meeting of the Genealogy Club that evening

Did you have an ancestor who was involved in the Revolutionary War and are interested in researching the possibility of membership in a legacy organization? This month, the Genealogy Club is hosting a special presentation by members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Eastern Shore Chapter. Book Discussion Group - Widow of the South by Robert Hicks

Thursday, July 16 at 7 p.m.

Tennessee, 1864. On a late autumn day, near a little town called Franklin, 10,000 men will soon lie dead or dying in a battle that will change many lives forever. Bring a snack and join us as we discuss this novel. Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she's had an incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be a personal maid on the Titanic's doomed voyage. Once on board, Tess catches the eye of two men, one a roughly-hewn but kind sailor and the other an enigmatic Chicago millionaire. But on the fourth night, disaster strikes. Set against a historical tragedy but told from a completely fresh angle, The Dressmaker is an atmospheric delight filled with all the period's glitz and glamor, all the raw feelings of a national tragedy and all the contradictory emotions of young love. Book Discussion Group - Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson 

Thursday, August 20 at 7:00 p.m.

Tracy Waterhouse, a retired police detective leading a quiet life, makes a snap decision to relieve habitual offender Kelly Cross of a young child he's been dragging around town. Tracy soon learns her parental inexperience is actually the least of her problems, as much larger ones loom for her and her young charge. Meanwhile, detective Jackson Brodie embarks on a different sort of rescue--that of an abused dog.    

 

Disaster Preparedness and Recovery: Where I've Been and What I've Learned

Vicki Lee, Director of Conservation and Preservation at the Maryland State Archives, will be sharing insights from some of her in-house, national and international archival rescue missions.  She will also touch upon some preparation measures and ways of thinking that can mitigate damage and loss in our own emergencies at home.
