Library Friends

As a Friend of the Queen Anne's County Library, you and your family members are invited to the second Annual Meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Kent Island Library, 200 Library Circle in Stevensville. After a brief business meeting and review of our mission statement, we will be treated to the talents of Chef David Clark of the top-rated 208 Talbot restaurant in St. Michaels.
A native of Centreville, Chef Clark graduated from the Baltimore International Culinary College, worked in a number of local restaurants, and owned and operated Julia's restaurant in Centreville before becoming the Opening Executive Chef of Bridges restaurant. He returned to 208 Talbot in 2013, where he had gained valuable experience earlier in his culinary career. Chef Clark has been voted Best Chef of the Eastern Shore by readers of What's Up magazine.
After Chef Clark demonstrates how he creates a hearty winter soup, you will have the opportunity to sample his creation. Wine and other beverages to complement the soup will also be available.

Individuals who are not members of the Friends may attend the annual meeting and demonstration for $10 per person. The registration fee will be applied to the Friends membership fee if they join the Friends that evening.

Highlighting a Community Partner

KIFA is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization, funded by donations and memberships. Our programs continue to grow, offering art classes in various media, including; painting, children's art classes, wood carving, photography, precious metal, clay, and more.
Our goal for the next decade is to expand the cultural and artistic climate of Queen Anne's County by encouraging participation in, and promotion of, the visual arts. We approach these goals through educational programs, exhibits, competitions, events, and cooperation with the public schools, the Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

Finger Painting Friday
Friday, Jan. 9 at 9:45 a.m.
For ages 1 to 5 with an adult
Songs, rhymes, puppets, and a story followed by finger painting. Dress for a fun mess! (Paints are washable.)
Let's Sew: Beginner's Class Monday, Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
For ages 8 to 18
Learn the parts of a sewing machine, how to read a pattern, and the basics about fabrics and threads. Then use our material (or bring a yard of cotton/cotton blend) to make a standard-sized pillowcase. Please reserve your space by calling (410) 643-8161. We will have 4 machines available. Please tell us if you are able to bring your own. Led by QAC 4-H.
Let's Sew: Project Q&A Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
For ages 8 to 18
Bring your pattern, supplies, and questions for a project you've started or would like to try. Let us help you reach your sewing goals! (Not sure what to make after a pillowcase? Sally from QAC 4-H will have supplies available for a pillow, apron, or simple skirt.) Please reserve your space by calling (410) 643-8161. We will have 4 machines available. Please tell us if you are able to bring your own.
Saturday Art  Series
Wye River Designs: Mosaic Picture Frame Saturday, Jan. 17 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
For grades K to 5
Paint a wooden picture frame and then cover the frame with many different colors of mosaic tiles.
This art series has been funded in part by the Queen Anne's County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council with support from the Friends of the Queen Anne's County Library and the Eastern Shore Regional Library.
STEM Saturdays: Snowball Catapults
Saturday, Jan. 10
Ages 4 to 7 from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. (waiting list only)
Ages 8 to 12 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (spaces available - please call to register)
Using the engineering design process, participants will work in teams to answer the question, "How can we design a catapult that launches a snowball the farthest?" Science skills will be incorporated through the discussion and use of simple machines and participants will use math skills to measure distance when they participate in a snowball launching competition to find out which team can launch the snowball the farthest. STEM Saturdays are scheduled once a month from January through May. Classes are taught by QACPS teacher Stephanie Wishart. Future topics are Gum Drop Tower, Leprechaun Balloon Rockets, Project Easter Egg, and Bubble Science. Registration will open 4 weeks prior to each event. This series is funded by a donation from the Sinsky-Kresser-Racusin Memorial Foundation.

Genealogy Club

Are you interested in learning about your family genealogy, but have no idea how to go about researching it? Have you been researching for years and are excited to share your discoveries with others? Starting in 2015, the Kent Island Library will be hosting a Genealogy Club every third Wednesday of the month. Each session will offer researchers a chance to learn about different websites and databases that can provide useful information as well as time for discussion and research using Library materials. 
Crafter's Social Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10:00 a.m. to noon
Do you love to craft? Join the new Crafter's Social at the Kent Island Library. We meet one Saturday a month in the morning. Join like-minded crafters as we work on projects, share our latest creations and discuss our creative goals. Crafters of all skill levels are welcome!

Most of the original collection of the Library of Congress was destroyed by the British in 1814 during the War of 1812. To restore the collection in 1815, the library bought from former president Thomas Jefferson, 6,487 books, his entire personal collection.
