Drug-Free Queen Anne's Coalition

We know that most of the adults in our Detention Center are there because of the direct or indirect use of alcohol or other drugs. The coalition continues to be needed to monitor and keep our community mindful of our need to be drug-free. If you want to assist in this effort, contact Kathy Wright, the Prevention Coordinator for QAC Department of Health 410-758-1306 x304.

For babies through age 5
Not-so-spooky stories, songs, rhymes and puppets. Color a treat bag, then wear your costume into the library to trick or treat!

Library Treat Bags 
Friday, Oct. 31 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
For ages 4 to 10
wear your costume to the library to decorate a treat bag and collect some Halloween goodies. Drop-in anytime from 1 to 4 p.m.


Bricks 4 Kidz: Transportation 
Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
For ages 5 to 13
Use LEGO bricks and B4K design plans to create a variety of transportation: car, dragster, airplane, train & railroad crossing, horse and buggy. ScratchJr - Create Interactive Stories 
Thursday, Nov. 6, 13 and 20 from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.
For ages 5 to 7
Drop in to work your way through a series of 4 programming modules using ScratchJr, an introductory programming app for young children available on our iPads. Drive a car across the screen, make characters dance and dribble a basketball, and design a spooky forest.

Mother Goose on the Loose 
Fridays, Nov. 7 and 14 at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m.
For ages 6 months to 3 years with an adult
Nursery rhymes, songs, movement, puppets, and story followed by playtime. The Mother Goose on the Loose app complements one or two of our 30+ rhymes/songs.

Wednesdays, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17 at 1:30 p.m.

For ages 3 to 5 with an adult
Read an Eric Carle story and enjoy books, songs & rhymes about a theme.  Then make a related project in the style of Eric Carle's art. Stories led by Ms Julie and art by Ms Ann.

Turkey Time 
Thursday, Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m.
For babies through age 5 with an adult
Sing, read, play, talk, and write about Thanksgiving followed by a turkey craft and playtime.

Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10:00 a.m. to noon
For grades K to 5
Do your children enjoy working with their hands, love to create jewelry, or live for crafting? This class introduces children to various techniques and hand tools for stamping, texturing, punching, riveting, and polishing metal. Children will have fun getting creative while making a key chain or pendant.

Alex Sabo: Introduction to Brush and Sponge Techniques 
Saturday, Nov. 22 from 10:00 a.m. to noon - Fall Colors
Saturday, Dec. 13 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. - Winter Colors
For grades K to 5
Use acrylic paints on canvas while learning wet and dry brush and sponge techniques. Different seasonal colors will be used, and each student will take home a finished painting. Taught by Alex Sabo of A Girl and A Brush and Kent Island Library's mural artist.

Brandy Redding: Personalized Ceramic Tile Coasters 
Saturday, Dec. 20 from 10:00 a.m. to noon
For grades K to 5
Create a handmade gift for someone special. Each student will make a set of 4 coasters using decorative papers and hand tie them with a personally crafted gift tag.

This art series has been funded in part by the Queen Anne's County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council with support from the Friends of the Queen Anne's County Library and the Eastern Shore Regional Library.

 NaNoWriMo Kick-Off

Did you start writing your novel at 12:01 a.m. today? Come to the Kent Island Library this afternoon to join fellow writers as you start your journey to a 50,000 word novel! Creative Fiction Writers with Peggy Jaegly

Nov. 6 and Dec. 4  at 7:00 p.m. 

Creative Fiction Writers is an independent and non-competing group for both beginner and advance writers who are serious about learning and improving their craft of creative writing. Members will learn how to provide and receive helpful critiques and explore various avenues to publish and market their work. Meetings may open with a discussion focusing on one aspect of writing, publishing or marketing to be followed by a voluntary critique session. Writers choosing to participate in the critique session may read no more than 10 pages of double-spaced in 12 point font (manuscript format) of their current writing project to receive a critique from those attending. Writers offering critique must first read and agree to the critique rules.


NaNoWriMo Write In

National Novel Writing Month is your chance to write that book. Join fellow writers for an intense hour dedicated to getting your words down.

Dealing with Difficult People During the Holidays

How do you endure six weeks of excess - an overtaxed schedule, strained finances, unrealistic expectations and people with whom you wouldn't ordinarily ask to lunch? Easton therapist and author Loriann Oberlin will tackle the topic and give you tips on how to survive the holiday season, ward off mistakes and manage emotions so that they don't get the better of you. She will also help you learn how to communicate boundaries and wishes effectively.  Loriann Oberlin earned a master's degree in clinical counseling from Johns Hopkins University and is the co-author of Overcoming Passive-Agression and The Angry Child as well as the author of Surviving Separation and Divorce. Join us in the library meeting room to gain skills to make your holiday more enjoyable for you and your family.
