Creative Fiction Writers with Peggy Jaegly

Oct. 23, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4  at 7:00 p.m.

Creative Fiction Writers is an independent and non-competing group for both beginner and advance writers who are serious about learning and improving their craft of creative writing. Members will learn how to provide and receive helpful critiques and explore various avenues to publish and market their work. Meetings may open with a discussion focusing on one aspect of writing, publishing or marketing to be followed by a voluntary critique session. Writers choosing to participate in the critique session may read no more than 10 pages of double-spaced in 12 point font (manuscript format) of their current writing project to receive a critique from those attending. Writers offering critique must first read and agree to the critique rules.

The Art of Charles and Anne West: The Last American Impressionists

Friday, Oct. 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Illustrated talk by Thomas G. West (in the library meeting room)

followed by a tour of the West Gallery (Lawyers Row, Centreville)

Charles and Anne West always remained true to the vision of the French Impressionists of the late 19th century -- with lively and colorful oil paintings of rural landscapes, town and river scenes, portraits of local people -- in many cases recording the history of the Eastern Shore before the Bay Bridge was built. Join us for an illustrated talk by their son, Thomas G. West.  We will then view the three paintings owned by the library and walk to the West Gallery on Lawyers Row where we complete the program.  Don't miss this rare opportunity to visit the West Gallery and learn more about these notable artists.

Fighting Chance by Jane Haddam

When Father Tibor is arrested on murder charges, it tears at the very foundation of Demarkian's world.  While Gregor has very strict rules about for whom and under what conditions he will consult, all those rules go by the wayside. In Fighting Chance, from award-winning author Jane Haddam, Demarkian is now a man possessed, and his one goal is to find out what really happened and who is really responsible for the murder Father Tibor is charged with.

This latest in Haddam's long running Demarkian series is much better than the last few have been and has some real plot twists. As always, the author has a social message - this time the perfidy of the juvenile justice system. A quick and satisfying read.
