What Staff are Reading
|
Peggy is reading...
This book tells the fascinating account of the bibliomania that led to the creation of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D. C. Henry Folger, a wealthy Standard Oil executive, and his wife Emily Jordan Folger, a Vassar graduate at a time when a college education for women was extremely rare, shared an adoration of everything Shakespeare. They traveled Europe seeking the earliest editions of his works and built a massive collection the plays, sonnets and physical memorabilia. Eventually they decided to share their library with the nation. Henry explored many possible sites, but decided finally on land across from the Library of Congress and began construction. Henry died in 1930, two years before the Folger was opened. Emily completed their project and remained involved in the library until her death in 1936. This is a book about books, obsessive book collecting and an outstanding library. It also more significantly relates the amazing relationship of Henry and Emily Folger and their "marriage of true minds." (Sonnet 116)
