Photo Contest

The Queen Anne's County Library is running a Father's Day Photo Contest. Submit a digital picture of fathers with their children doing library related activities. This includes, but is not limited to: reading, crafting and computers. The more creative the better. Subjects can be young children, adult children, even grandchildren with their grandfathers.

Old pictures can be scanned and submitted electronically. Need some help? The library's copier can be used as a scanner at no charge and staff members are always on hand to assist. File size cannot exceed 2MB. Multiple entries are allowed, but entrants can only win once.

Three photos will be selected and winners will receive a $15 gift card to a local hardware store. The photos will be featured on our website and Facebook page for one week. Entrants must sign a photo release.

Submit photographs from now until June 13th. Our first photo winner will be selected on May 30th.

Send your photos to info@qaclibrary.org

Special Thanks to Kent Island Volunteers and Their Dogs of the Read-to-Rover Project!

Thank you to our volunteers and their Pets on Wheels dogs who have made the Read to Rover program so successful over the past two years:

Sue and Chance, Denise, Anna, Erica, Mia and Lindsey, Anne and Carly, Jean and Yoda, and Helen and Dux. Each month these dogs read with children for almost 200 minutes. They give children a chance to practice reading skills and gain confidence in the presence of a friendly canine listener. Thanks to all who participate in Read to Rover!

Please check our calendar of children's events for upcoming dates when your child can schedule a visit with our Read to Rover volunteers.   Check calendar!

What Staff are Reading

Peggy is reading...

On May 28th Maya Angelou passed away at the age of 86. For years I have enjoyed and been enlightened by her poetry and memoirs so I decided to re-read her most famous book. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first in her series of autobiographies and a powerful account of growing up in segregated, racist America during the 1930's and 40's. Because of their parent's divorce, Maya (Marguerite) and Bailey Johnson, age 3 and 4, are sent alone by train from California to Stamps, Arkansas to live with their paternal grandmother. Their experiences are richly detailed and offer a graphic portrait of depression era life in both the rural south and the city of St. Louis. Although I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings has frequently been banned because it includes child rape, prostitution, teenage sex and pregnancy, it is beautifully written story that will reward readers with new insights and human understanding.
