Highlighting a Community Partner
|
All children and youth need caring, supportive adults in their lives in order to become responsible, productive citizens in their community.
The CC! Advisory Council believes in using a four-step model to help build citizens of character. This involves a volunteer force of character coaches in the classroom, countless role models in the community, inter-generational developmental assets, and one-on-one mentors all interacting with students on a regular basis.
It takes a caring, supportive community to raise children and youth of character. Be involved!
For more information or to volunteer call 410-758-6677 or click here
The "Six Pillars of Character"
- serve as guideposts for the countless choices children and adults are asked to make on a daily basis.
Trustworthiness
--- Respect --- Responsibility --- Fairness --- Caring --- Citizenship

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Thursday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Book Discussion Group
To call Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God an "African American feminist classic" may be an accurate statement - it is certainly a frequent statement - but it is a misleadingly narrow and rather dull way to introduce a vibrant and achingly human novel. The 1937 novel narrates Janie Crawford's ripening from a vibrant, but voiceless, teenage girl into a woman with her finger on the trigger of her own destiny. Although Hurston wrote the novel in only seven weeks, Their Eyes Were Watching God breathes and bleeds a whole life's worth of urgent experience.

What Staff are Reading |
I had the opportunity to hear Simon Sinek speak about his new book "Leaders Eat Last" at the Public Library Association Conference in March. I was so impressed with his talk I waited in line for two hours to get a signed copy. His basic premise is that we are biologically hard wired to work together as long as we have a "circle of safety" within our workplace. He explains the mindset needed to become a leader who inspires employees as opposed to someone who simply manages employees. If you are frustrated by why we lack good leadership in Congress or on Wall Street then you will his book worth reading.
