Storytime-on-Wheels Volunteer Appreciation!

On April 30, an afternoon tea was held at the Centreville Branch, to thank volunteers of the Storytime-on-Wheels Program for their service. The volunteers deliver monthly reading programs to children in licensed home day care centers in Queen Anne's County.

Three volunteers, Marcella Bordley, Pat Meyers and Pat Sorenson were recognized for their continuous service since the beginning of the program in 1999. An original watercolor from the children's book, Rosie's Posies will be placed in the Centreville Branch and three children's books will be added to the collection of the Kent Island Branch in their honor. The painting and books were donated by local artist/illustrator Marcy Dunn Ramsey.

Julie Ranelli (Children's Librarian), Pat Meyers (Volunteer), Bob Simmons (QAC Commissioner), Jenny Gallagher (Children's Librarian) and Marcella Bordley (Volunteer)

Tips to Learning Bird Songs
Tuesday, May 21 from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m.
Something About Maryland Lunchtime Series
You are out enjoying nature and you see the birds hopping and flying and you hear the birds singing. But wait! What bird is singing that song? You know what many birds look like, but those tweets and whistles and squawks are just too hard to learn...or are they?

Jim Wilson will provide tips on how to sort out and learn the songs of some of the birds that are in the Centreville area. He will go over some of the tools available to help you learn bird songs in the comfort of your home. For those interested, Jim will lead a follow-up bird walk on Saturday morning, May 25, at an early hour to take advantage of the Dawn Chorus. Comments, special requests and questions can be e-mailed to Jim Wilson at [email protected] or call him at

 410-758-3717.

The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje
Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m.
Book Discussion Group
In the early 1950s, an eleven-year-old boy in Colombo boards a ship bound for England. At mealtimes he is seated at the "cat's table" -- as far from Captain's Table as can be -- with a ragtag group of "insignificant" adults and two other boys.  As the ship crosses the Indian Ocean, the boys tumble from one adventure to another. By turns poignant and electrifying, The Cat's Table is a spellbinding story about the magical, often forbidden, discoveries of childhood.
