September 2, 2016
Dear JIPC Family,

Transition. A change from one state to another. Perhaps the early risers among us have noticed a marked change in the early morning air of late. I wouldn't say cool just yet. Just markedly different. A signal from nature that we are in transition. Summer will pass, giving birth to a brand new season.
In general revelation, the Psalmist declares "the heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." It is a beautiful thought to know God is in control. Control of nature. Control of creation. Control of our transitions.
This is the first "non-summer summer" I remember in a long time. It just never really felt like summer. Except for the heat. Nonetheless transition is under way. Night is arriving sooner. Eventually-the air will become cooler and unmistakably we will enter the season of autumn.
Transitions and seasons are basic to our lives of faith. The only constant is change. It's part of the rhythm of the spiritual life. Realities return to a more familiar normal. School is back in session. Daily activities take on a more easily planned and predictable place. So, too, our worship.
Fall has a melancholy feel for me. Summer is going to sleep. "Freddie the Leaf" reminds us of our mortality and invites us to reflect on what has been and what we will be about in the days ahead. Shortly, we will move into a more deliberate focus in the life of our community of faith. Stewardship is not a program in the fall, but more honestly a way of life. Time, Talents, and Treasures, of which money is a part, will serve as invitations for each of us to consider God's graciousness towards us. We will give witness that we cannot out-give God. God desires to bless us with good things that we might in turn be a blessing to others both within and outside the walls of our beloved community of faith. Autumn serves as a reminder that nature, and we, are in transition. Growing in grace. Maturing in wisdom. Becoming more and more Christ-like. Our faith reminds us that God is in control-even of our spiritual seasons and transitions.
I invite each of us to mark the changing season with a renewal of our prayer lives. Reflect on the portion of the year which has passed while prayerfully looking forward, with great anticipation, to all that God will be about through our individual and corporate lives together. God is with us as we transition- "change from one state to another."
See you in worship, small groups, and in and around our community.

The Book of James, led by Beth Moore

Back by popular demand, we will take another look at this study of James. Last studied here in 2012, we all agree that God has something new to teach in every season of life. Those who participated in this study before are welcome to use their original book or buy a new one. And of course, we will be placing an order for first-time students. The class format will be a video presentation one week followed by member & book study the next week.
