"I can do everything through him who gives me strength," Philippians 4:13

The "dog days" of summer are upon us. The Greek origin of the concept is more about a star than the four-legged animals we associate them with. The concept is at least as old as Homer's Iliad. The heat is so prolonged and intense that dogs are content to simply lie around, panting. Returning home on Monday I found our cat Zeus, lying in the shade, in the corner of our front porch and you guessed it-panting from the heat.

It's hard to believe summer is nearing an end and almost overwhelming to think the heat of "dog days" marks its end. Our bodies and minds are fatigued from the varied and frenzied activities of the times. Paul understood we are body, mind, and soul. We may not even think of spiritual fatigue as being associated with the dog days of summer. But it's true. We may grow fatigued spiritually as well.

In Philippians, Chapter four and verse 13, Paul reminds us from where, and in whom, our spiritual strength is acquired. Interestingly enough, the admission of needing help precedes our receiving it. Writing from prison, Paul drew energy from his understanding that even in difficult times rejoicing in the Lord brought strength. A strength from the Lord though beyond him yet being available to him. The end result? His weakness transformed into an opportunity for the strength of God to work through him.

How about you? The "dog days" of summer got you tired and over whelmed? May I encourage each of us to admit we need help? God's help. Admitting we need it is the first step to receiving it. Oh, and like Paul.... may I encourage us to continue our celebrating the disciplines of the Christian faith? Remember the disciplines don't replace God. They work as vehicles positioning us in those places through which God works.

Be safe in the heat, and strong in your weakness. Your weakness being admitting you need help and being open to God's providing it. Like Paul, we will proclaim, "I've been without enough, I've been overwhelmed with too much, but through it all I've learned-I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." See you in worship!
Much grace and peace,

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church

Late in 2015, the City of Charleston began a project to further strengthen relationships between Charleston citizens and police by respecting the importance of Public Safety and Individual Rights.  The Charleston Illumination Project held dozens of small-group Listening Sessions throughout the City of Charleston.  Over 650 people participated, representing the wide diversity of Charleston's citizens. These sessions revealed the hopes and concerns of the community's and produced actions plans to build open and long-lasting relationships between the police and the citizens they serve. In addition, the Illumination Project hosts monthly prayer gatherings for the community as we seek God's blessing upon our work to bring healing and hope to our community. The next prayer gathering for the Illumination Project will be August 18 at St. Andrew's Presbyterian at 9:00 am. Everyone from the community is encouraged to attend!
