From Pastor Sam

"And after the fire came a gentle whisper."
1 Kings 19: 12c

I thoroughly enjoyed Cameron's sermon this past Sunday! I, like her, really enjoy "ordinary time." The valley between the peaks of January and December. We are midway through the year. I know we're midway for I can look back at January and forward to December. June. The middle. Ordinary time.

I was sitting at a traffic light last week and I could feel it before I heard it. Then I could hear it and feel it. Everyone around me could feel it and hear it as well. Ford F250 HD. Lift kit. Directional Thirty sixes. Sweet ride. But the music was so loud it was hard to breathe. My rear view was shaking as was my chest. Obnoxious music-loud-was all I could hear. And then it struck me. Often times, the voices of everyday living are so loud as to drown out our ability to hear anything else. It's hard to breathe. It's like the music is pounding on our chest making it hard even to breathe much less hear a gentle whisper. Thankfully, the truck turned left and I celebrated by rolling the driver's window down at the next light. Calm. Silence. So quiet I could hear the soothing screech of the osprey hunting just above me and to the right. After the loud sounds a soft sound. A gentle whisper......

In the summer pace, it can be hard to discern that gentle whisper of the sweet voice our souls long to hear. So many loud noises clamoring for our attention. We long for quiet time. Ordinary time. I'm so grateful God has given us tools to quiet all the "soul static." Disciplines to help position us to hear God speak through the gentle whisper we often miss. Disciplines like worship. Bible study. Celebrating the sacraments. Fellowship with other believers. Holy conversation. Each working to quiet the often obnoxious sounds which make it hard to discern that clear, sweet, unmistakable whisper of God's voice.

Summer time is a busy time. A noisy time inwardly and outwardly. May I encourage you to set aside some time this summer for periods of "self-care?" Walk on the beach at sunrise. Take a bike ride. Watch it rain from the safety of a covered porch. Hit downtown with your significant other and walk the cobblestone streets just because. But be prepared. It's often when you least expect it. Easy to overlook because you're pretty sure God wouldn't speak from there. God speaks through earthquakes. Through high winds. Through fire. After the earthquake, high winds, and fire, Elijah discovered God was not in them. But afterward. After those loud, obnoxious sounds it came. The voice of God in a gentle whisper....

God is whispering to us in ways that will transform our souls. Can you hear it?

Celebrate those gifts of God working to position us to hear the whisper of God. It will transform your soul during these ordinary times.

Trusting you enjoy a fun and deeply blessed summer!

JIPC PICTORIAL DIRECTORY UPDATED
We hope you received your email on Tuesday night with a link to the updated directory.  If you did not, please contact the church office.

Did you know that we have a secure online pictorial directory for members of JIPC? Did you know that there's an app so that you can  view it all on your smart phone or tablet? We do, and it is a great resource to help us stay connected as a church body. Please follow these easy steps to help us out:
  1. Visit the directory by installing the "Instant Church Directory" app on your smart phone or tablet or by visiting www.instantchurchdirectory.com. Use the email that the church has on file for you to log in. You will be issued a password to gain access.
  2. Check to be sure that your contact information is correct and that you have a photo on file.
  3. Email cameron@jamesislandpc.org with any changes or with a new photo. While they won't be in the print directory we just distributed, they'll be in the online directory.
  4. If you do not have access to a computer, contact the church office so that we can check your information and mail you a printed copy of the directory.

Remember Niger Coalition,
JIPC Mission Partner,
Kicks off campaign to build Secondary School in Zinder

The Remember Niger Coalition has the opportunity to make secondary school possible for even more students in Niger. Parents of the Zinder Primary School have been asking for a secondary school for years so that their children might continue their quality education. In response, our partners started construction on a building with their own funds last September. But they need your help to complete the building!
Zinder's Secondary School will allow 150 Nigerien students to receive a quality education through 9th grade. That means hundreds of lives will be forever changed every year. The needs are great in Niger, and together we have the means to meet those needs. Please help us build Zinder's Secondary School by contributing a brick at $40 each, row at $400 each, or wall at $4,000 each.
Together we can change lives! Thank you for your support and partnership.
Will you help us build the first secondary school in Zinder? Donate a brick, row or wall today! Click here to HELP BUILD A SCHOOL, brick by brick, book by book.
