 Late Winter 2014

Around the country, it has been a difficult winter. Cities across the US and Canada are experiencing record snowfalls and brutal cold. I have seen many pictures and status updates on Facebook and other social media, and there is one thing that I know--pharmacists are some of the most dependable, dedicated professionals on earth! Whatever your practice setting, you made the effort to get to work and take care of your patients!

Although the calendar says March, summer is really much closer than it seems. Along with summer comes the annual convention of Lambda Kappa Sigma! Convention is scheduled for July 23-26, 2014, in beautiful Naples, Florida. Convention will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria, right on the Gulf of Mexico. I can feel the warm water and sun already!

The focus of convention this year is Communication. We have some excellent speakers and workshops planned. You will not be disappointed. Our keynote speaker is one you will not want to miss. Don't want to give away too many details just yet...be sure to watch your e-mail for more convention information.

Also, it's very important to remember that after our Centennial Celebration last year, which was a three-day convention, the schedule returns to the usual four-day format. That's a whole day more of sisterhood!!

I'm also really excited to continue to receive so many inquiries about establishing and reactivating alumni chapters. Remember, you only need 6 sisters to be an active chapter, you don't need to be in an area where there is an established collegiate chapter and you can choose the way that your chapter meets (in person, by Skype or even by e-mail). The chapter exists for YOU. The way that you choose to be active should be the one that meets the needs of the membership!

Thank you for your continued support. Lambda Kappa Sigma is stronger than ever, thanks to the efforts of Lambs everywhere!

I am a Lamb for Life!

All my best,

Grand Vice President for Alumni
Lambs in Florida!

When pharmacists gather, you can be certain that
Lambs will be there!

The ASHP Meeting was held in Orlando, Florida, in December 2013. As sisters have come to expect, a dessert reception was held during this important gathering of pharmacists, the largest gathering of pharmacists in the world.

It is always so exciting to see sisters greeting each other, especially those who have recently met at convention. These are truly the beginnings of lifelong friendships. I can still recall my first convention in Pittsburgh in 1982. Many of the sisters I met there continue to be close friends today. I look forward to seeing them at LKS conventions and gatherings of pharmacists.

The APhA Convention begins the last week in March 2014, and Lambda Kappa Sigma will be there! This meeting is also being held in Orlando, Florida. Our reception will be held on Saturday, March 29 at the Hyatt (formerly the Peabody). More details will be arriving in your e-mail in the very near future. We sure do hope to see you there. We've got some very fun things planned for the event (think beach!).

Project HOPE--Our Fantastic Philanthropy

ProjectHope

A recent tradition at convention is HOPE waLKS, a fundraising trek across the cities where we meet.

Lambda Kappa Sigma has been proud to support Project HOPE since the early 1960s...and they are proud to have us as supporters.

The most recent HOPE annual report features an article about our long partnership...and you can ready about it here. It is on page 20 of the PDF document (page 36 in the report).

Thanks for your continued support of Project HOPE. Because of your support, the proud tradition continue!

This Issue's Lamb Question

Who is this beautiful sister, and what has happened to her hair?

This is Keely Ireland, Xi collegiate and Epsilon alum, and she has shaved her head for a very important cause!

Keely is an avid sports competitor and will be participating in the Ulman Cancer Foundation Key to Keys bike ride. Keely was challenged to raise $4,000 in 31 days, and she met the challenge. From the looks of her picture, and true to her word, she celebrated this goal in a very stylish way!

Keely is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and also has a law degree from the University of Baltimore. She is a pharmacist specialist with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Maryland.

We are proud to have such a caring and fun loving member like Keely!
Lambda Kappa Sigma Educational Trust
LKS dessert reception 2009

The LKS Educational Trust Appeal, traditionally held each fall, was once again a huge success, thanks to your support.

The Educational Trust continues to grow, thanks to your generous donations. Each year, Educational Grants are awarded based on the amount of interest generated by the base funds of the Trust. When the market is down, your continued donations help the Trust to grow and to help to offset down economic conditions. When the market is good, your donations are magnified. Either way, the Educational Trust, and the sisters of Lambda Kappa Sigma, are the winners!

Thanks to everyone for their unconditional support of the LKS Educational Trust. YOU are making a difference in the education of our Sisters.

Jillian Dempsey, a student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and a member of Alpha Chapter, was the first recipient of the Marilyn & Joe E. Haberle Educational Grant. Read her inspiring story of what LKS and the grant mean to her.

Congratulations to our newest alumni chapter, Alpha Chi!
  lamb

Thanks to the efforts of Jackie Kruse and many other sisters, we have been able to charter Alpha Chi alumni chapter. The chapter is currently comprised of sisters from NEOMED (Northeast Ohio Medical University).

If you are an Alpha Chi sister--or you are not a NEOMED graduate but live in the area--you can be a part of this new chapter, too, by emailing Jackie.

If you are interested in establishing or reactivating an alumni chapter, please contact me. It's a very easy process, and I can help you get started. All you need is a minimum group of 6 sisters, and you can have an alumni chapter!

Lambda Kappa Sigma Alumni Dues

One of the most important lessons that we learn in pharmacy is medication safety. We build safety into our systems, often building in redundancies, so that we have the very best outcomes for our patients.

On occasion, errors do make their way through. We hate it when that happens, but we try to learn from our errors and keep it from happening again.

Alumni dues statements were recently mailed. Some of our very sharp sisters noted that we had failed to include the dues increase that was approved at the convention in July. Although the dues statements had passed by many sets of eyes, the error somehow made its way through to the members.

Well, just like in medication safety, we have examined the problem and implemented steps to be sure that this doesn't happen again. If you have already paid your dues, you will not be asked for more money. If you have paid the higher amount through your chapter, the chapter has the option of returning the extra amount to their members. The correct amount will appear on next year's dues statement.

Thank you for your understanding. You truly are the best sisters in the world!

The Bowl of Hygeia

Judy Riffee, Alpha Omicron alum and a Past Grand President, was the recipient of the Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. The award was presented by the Florida Pharmacy Association at their meeting in July 2013.

Established in 1958, the award encourages pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities and recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership. This award is considered one of the most prestigious in the profession.

LKS is proud of Judy and her contributions to pharmacy! If you know of other LKS sisters who are presented with prestigious pharmacy awards, please let us know!
Collegiate Chapters in Development

Grand Vice President for Development, Tiffany Self, has announced three new chapters in development!

Alpha Omega (Sullivan University College of Pharmacy in Louisville, KY), Beta Alpha (D'Youville College School of Pharmacy in Buffalo, NY) and Beta Beta (Western New England College of Pharmacy in Springfield, MA) are all in the process of becoming chartered with Lambda Kappa Sigma. This is truly exciting!

If you live in any of these areas and can assist in nurturing and helping these chapters with their development process, please contact Tiffany Self. These chapters will be truly grateful for the knowledge and sisterly love that you can lend to them!
