March 2015

Letter from the Editor

Is the year already flying by or is it just me?! I hope you had a successful February and that your March is enjoyable as well.

This month, we would like to give you some tips about staying safe on the Internet, especially after hearing about the recent Microsoft vulnerability and the Lenovo SuperFish vulnerability.

We have prepared a Cash Drawer Balancing video that can help you keep track of the money in your cash drawer. It also demonstrates how to make deposits using the application!

And we are continuing the Google/gmail tip each month trend!

Internet Safety Tips

Google has some great tips for you to stay safe online! Some of the major points covered in the article are specific to Google and Gmail accounts, but you can also apply many of them to other websites and email providers:
www-abstract-globe.jpg
  • enabling family-friendly SafeSearch in the Google search engine
  • enabling 2-step verification to your Google account
  • allowing your Google Chrome browser to create unique and difficult passwords that will be remembered by the browser (Excellware also recommends use of LastPass which works with the most popular web browsers)
  • giving Gmail your cell phone number in case you need to regain access to your email account
  • updating your browser so security flaws are patched
  • locking your mobile device from your browser in case it has been stolen
And if you do have a Google account, use this link to run a check-up on it to make sure it is as protected as safe as possible! Google will display locations where your email account was accessed and you can report suspicious behavior. You can also change your password.
bugMicrosoft Fixes "Jasbug," a Fifteen-Year-Old Vulnerability

In February, Microsoft announced that they had fixed a vulnerability, one that would've allowed hackers to install malware on your device or steal your documents, only becoming aware of it after 15 years.

It affected all newer versions of Windows, from Vista to 8.1 -- but it should no longer be an issue.

Jeff Schmidt of the company JAS Global Advisors discovered the flaw and alerted Microsoft. The flaw took about a year to fix because it affected an integral part of the engine design, and so reconstruction and a lot of testing was necessary.

No breaches of Jasbug have been discovered yet, fortunately, but some may come to light in the future. For more info, please click here.
superfishLenovo SuperFish

Lenovo admitted to pre-loading software with the name SuperFish onto their Lenovo Notebook PCs that were distributed from September 2014 to February 2015. Lenovo claims the software was intended to aid users in finding products similar to what they were searching for online.

fish3.jpg The software has been disabled on the server side and should no longer affect anyone who uses one of the models in the link above. However, if you would like to take some extra precautions, you can follow the instructions to remove the software from your PC.

If you do not use any Lenovo Notebook PCs, then you have not been affected by SuperFish at all.

googleGmail Tip of the Month: Filters

Last month, in the Gmail tip about labels, I mentioned that you can filter emails so that they're automatically labeled when they arrive.

What else can filters do? In addition to labeling, they can automatically forward messages, star them, delete them, or archive them.

To create a filter, click on the little drop-down arrow next to the search box at the top of the screen. From there, you can filter by sender, content, subject, and more. You can also specify a date range. Then choose an action to be applied to the messages you selected:
  • Mark as read
  • Star it
  • Apply a label
  • Forward it
  • Delete it
  • Never send it to Spam
  • Always mark it as important
  • Never mark it as important
  • Categorize it
Another way to set up a filter is by creating one once you've opened an email, click the More button at the top of the screen and then select Filter messages like these

You can edit or delete filters in your Gmail Settings.
