DON'T MISS:  St. Marks Information Session, March 25th!

Join the Falmouth Housing Trust on Wednesday, March 25th, from 6:30 - 7:30pm to hear about the application and lottery process involved with purchasing a deed-restricted house at St. Marks Road.

The information session will be held in the Cultural Room at the Hallett Barn, Falmouth Historical Society, located at 55-65 Palmer Avenue in downtown Falmouth.  Parking is located in the rear of the property, and accessed off Katherine Lee Bates Road.

The information session is free and open to the public.  Interested parties will hear how to qualify to purchase a home, steps one must take, a detailed explanation and review of the St. Marks application, as well as information on the lottery process.  Members of the project team will also be on hand to answer more specific questions about the houses.

The project calls for the construction of three individual homes, two of which will be 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Cape Cod style homes, and the third will be a ranch style home, also with 3-bedrooms and 2-bathrooms.  The ranch will be visitable.

Each house will have a distinct 1/3 of an acre lot, but all will share one curb cut off of St. Marks Road.  The homes will be built to the Energy Star standard and are oriented on the lot to maximize southern exposure and privacy.  Landscaping plantings will also augment privacy and create natural borders with neighbors and the street.

The northern tip of the 1-acre parcel, along Rt. 28, will have a Cape Cod  Regional Transit Authority bus stop for the community's use.

Members of the project team include the FHT Clerk of the Works, Mike Duffany of Duffany Builders, Christan Valle and Mike Katon of The Valle Group, Inc. and architect Bill Roslansky.  Construction financing has been provided by the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank in Falmouth.

For more information about the project, or to download the application please consult our web site, www@falmouthhousingtrust.org, or by phone, 508-540-2370.

Update on the Housing Round Table Community Meeting!
The Board of Selectmen and Planning Board recently discussed housing at a joint meeting held earlier this month.  The two boards reviewed a number of documents, the upcoming Town Meeting, and briefly touched on housing policy and follow-up to the Round Table.  They ultimately decided to set a date for both boards to attend a workshop to further deliberate and set housing goals and policies for the Town of Falmouth.
In the audience were members from the Falmouth Housing Trust, the Affordable Housing Committee and the EDIC.  These three organizations hosted the Round Table Community Meeting and worked closely with consultant, Judi Barrett on the Town of Falmouth's Housing Needs Assessment.  Audience members were disappointed that no public comment was allowed during the joint meeting.
We at the Falmouth Housing Trust remain hopeful that both elected Boards will take key recommendations from Ms. Barrett's Assessment; namely involving stakeholders and members of our community to participate fully in housing policy creation.  An important step in setting the tone of collaboration will be an invitation to participate in the above referenced workshop.  If you agree please take a moment and drop the Board of Selectmen or Planning Board a line with your thoughts.  They can be reached electronically at Selectmen@falmouthmass.us or planning@falmouthmass.us.
Thank you for your support!

UPDATE:  Odd Fellows Hall Adaptive Re-Use Project
Odd Fellows Hall
Thank you to the Falmouth Fund who recently made public its award of $2,000 to the Odd Fellows Hall Adaptive Re-Use project.  This is the second grant from the local foundation and brings their total contribution to this important project to $4,000!

The Falmouth Housing Trust was approved for a $209,000 grant from the Town of Falmouth's Affordable Housing Fund in December!  We are in queue to simultaneously close on the Odd Fellows Hall property and the grant documents later this month.

Still a source of contention is the one condition included in our Comprehensive Permit on the property, the requirement that reinforced turf be used for on-site parking instead of asphalt.  What does this mean to the project?  It will cost more to build and maintain annually, and also removes the visitability of the project.

Have more in depth questions?  Email us at info@falmouthhousingtrust.org!  Interested in helping with the unexpected cost increases?  Consult our capital campaign section or contact our office, 508-540-2370.

MEET the Falmouth Housing Trust Board of Directors:  CAREY MURPHY

Carey Murphy was born in New Bedford but soon moved to Bainbridge, NY with his family where he grew-up, graduating from High School. Carey served in the United States Army, following which he attended Johnson & Wales Culinary School.

He met his wife Martha in Vermont and the couple soon moved to Cape Cod where they owned a retail business on Main Street in Falmouth, and later in Mashpee Commons. The Murphys sold their business two years ago after running it for thirty-one years, while raising their three sons, and countless dogs.

Carey Murphy served as the Massachusetts State Chairman of Ducks Unlimited, a premier wetlands and waterfowl habitat restoration and protection organization from 1995 - 1996. He also served as Selectman for nine years for the Town of Falmouth and said this about the experience, "Loved it, it's been one of the most rewarding and intellectually enriching experiences of my life."

Martha and Carey have lived in Hatchville and Waquoit, but when asked is hard-pressed to select one village or area as his favorite, as he states, "Falmouth represents a cultural, economic, and environmental diversity that you cannot find everywhere. Falmouth is the perfect destination to visit.  Its history, cultural offerings, beaches, numerous recreational opportunities from golf to the bike path, to its centralized location to the Islands and major cities like Boston and Providence all combine to make Falmouth a very attractive and accessible place."

When asked about his service and tenure as a member of the Falmouth Housing Trust Board of Directors he stated, "The housing issues on Cape Cod, and particularly in Falmouth, continue to stifle our growth as a community. Housing, jobs, and a clean environment are the three legged stool on which we will need to step up onto and leave a legacy that future generations can enhance. We need to leave this place in better shape than when we arrived. Serving on the FHT Board helps me work with a team of others that have the same desire for improvement in our beautiful town."

When not volunteering with the Falmouth Housing Trust or other environmental land causes Carey loves to golf, ski, and spend time with his wife of 33 years, three sons, and newest member of the family, his grandson.
