Join us at THE FALMOUTH WALK!

The Falmouth Housing Trust is honored to have been included for the second year as The Falmouth Walk's charitable beneficiaries!  Join us for the 24th Annual Falmouth Walk on Saturday, August 16th.

The history of the Walk starts in 1991. Two old friends, Tommy Leonard, a bartender at the Quarterdeck Restaurant, and Eddie Doyle, a bartender at "Cheers" in Boston, came up the idea for the Falmouth Walk to benefit the Babe Ruth World Series. It attracted 40 walkers and raised $700. Last year, the 23rd annual Walk had 675 registered walkers and raised $30,000. All proceeds go to local Falmouth charities.

The Walk takes a 3.2 mile scenic route beginning at Falmouth Town Hall Square, along Surf Drive beach to the inner harbor and back to Main Street ending at the beautiful grounds of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. A 1.5 mile shortcut is available. A picnic, raffle, silent and live auction follow.

We step off at 10 AM. Registration takes place on Friday the 15th in the evening from 5:00 to 7:30 at the Quarterdeck Restaurant, 164 Main Street, and continues Saturday at 9:00 AM, and the entry fee is $20.

The charities that will benefit from the funds raised at this year's Walk are The Falmouth Military Support Group, The Falmouth Service Center, The Falmouth Housing Trust, The Friends of the Falmouth Senior Center, The Falmouth Prevention Partnership, The Ellen T. Mitchell Scholarship, Haven for Healing, Around the Table, and People for Cats.

Odd Fellows Adaptive Re-Use Project Moving Into Final Stages!
The Odd Fellows Hall project has finished its permitting with both the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Zoning Board of Appeals.  FHT is currently working out the details of the comprehensive permit and its "conditions".

Key aspects of the project are:
  • the interior will be entirely gutted,
  • the abatement of all hazardous materials to allow for full code compliance,
  • the replacement of all mechanical and electrical systems,
  • the renovation of the exterior of the building with the installation of new siding, energy efficient windows and doors, and a new roof,
  • tying the building into the sewer line,
  • re-landscaping, and the addition of a ramp and four tenant parking spaces,
  • solar panel installation on the replacement roof to harness renewable energy sources and reduce operating costs,
  • the two first floor apartments will be visitable, and the second story apartments will be standard.
Our next steps in the process will include a funding application to the Town of Falmouth to access Affordable Housing Fund monies.  Once that process is completed successfully we are off to the races ... We hope to have all final administrative details wrapped-up and to start construction in the fall.

St. Marks Housing Project Update
The St. Marks home-ownership project is likely to have a construction commencement this September.  The project calls for the creation of three individual homes, two of which will be 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Cape Cod style homes, and the third will be a ranch style home, also with 3-bedrooms and 2-bathrooms.  The ranch will be visitable

Each house will have a distinct 1/3 of an acre lot, but all will share one curb cut off of St. Marks Road.  The homes will be built to the Energy Star standard and are oriented on the lot to maximize southern exposure and privacy.  FHT hopes to incorporate solar energy into the project, depending upon grant and major donor funding availability.  Landscaping plantings will also augment privacy and create natural borders with neighbors and the street.  All plantings will be drought resistant.

The northern tip of the 1-acre parcel, along Rt. 28, will have a Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority bus stop installed for the community's use.

The Falmouth Housing Trust has completed the permitting phase of the project and awaits a closing date with the Town of Falmouth.

The Woods Hole Foundation recently awarded FHT a grant to create attractive post lighting for each of the three homes!  Hats off to them for their generosity.

The project team includes "Citizen of the Year" Mike Duffany, Christian Valle of The Valle Group, architect Bill Roslansky, FHT volunteer Gene Black, and Tim Santos of Holmes & McGrath.  Construction financing will provided by Cape Cod 5 Cents Savings Bank in Falmouth.

For more information about the project, or to make a donation, please contact the FHT office, via email, info@falmouthhousingtrust.org, or by phone, 508-540-2370.
