| Odd Fellows Project Gets Major Boost! |
The Odd Fellows Hall capital campaign received a major boost in funding this week. The Kelley Foundation, a local philanthropic organization tasked with "promoting the health and welfare of the inhabitants of Barnstable County," granted $5,000 to the Falmouth Housing Trust for the Adaptive Re-Use project.
Key aspects of the project are:
- the interior will be entirely gutted,
- the abatement of all hazardous materials to allow for full code compliance,
- the replacement of all mechanical and electrical systems,
- the renovation of the exterior of the building with the installation of new siding, energy efficient windows and doors, and a new roof,
- tying the building into the sewer line,
- re-landscaping, and the addition of a ramp and four tenant parking spaces,
- solar panel installation on the replacement roof to harness renewable energy sources and reduce operating costs,
- the two first floor apartments will be visitable, and the second story apartments will be standard.
FHT has started to prepare documents relative to the permitting phase of the project with the Town of Falmouth and Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

| YOUTH in FOCUS:
Falmouth Kids Making a Difference!
|
Hats off to Elizabeth Johnson, recent Falmouth High School graduate!
 | | Elizabeth Johnson |
Elizabeth volunteered earlier this spring and summer in the FHT office assisting in maintaining our Media Log. Lizzy, as her friends call her, wrote her senior essay on housing needs in Falmouth ~ what a topic ~ following which she decided to give back to FHT.
For fun Lizzy enjoys swimming, puzzles, and watching movies with friends. This summer she is spending time with family in Dracut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. A recent trip to Boston, where she'll attend Simmons College in the fall, allowed her to practice riding the "T", (also known as the subway system).
Elizabeth graduated from Falmouth High School in June of 2013. At Simmons College, her focus of study will be Computer Science and Library Science.
Elizabeth is the daughter of Meri Linnea Jones and the niece of local therapist, Jenny Putnam. She is the granddaughter of Brenda and Charles Olson, also of Falmouth.
GOOD LUCK ELIZABETH!

| St. Marks Housing Project Update |
The St. Marks home-ownership project calls for the creation of three individual homes, two of which will be 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Cape Cod style homes, and the third will be a ranch style home, also with 3-bedrooms and 2-bathrooms. The ranch will be visitable.
Each house will have a distinct 1/3 of an acre lot, but all will share one curb cut off of St. Marks Road. The homes will be built to the Energy Star standard and are oriented on the lot to maximize southern exposure and privacy. FHT hopes to incorporate solar energy into the project, depending upon grant and major donor funding availability. Landscaping plantings will also augment privacy and create natural borders with neighbors and the street. All plantings will be drought resistant.
The Falmouth Housing Trust has entered into the permitting phase of the project and plans a spring 2014 construction start. The project team includes "Citizen of the Year" Mike Duffany, Christian Valle of The Valle Group, architect Bill Roslansky, FHT volunteer Gene Black, and Tim Santos of Holmes & McGrath. Construction financing will provided by Cape Cod 5 Cents Savings Bank in Falmouth. A neighborhood meeting will be scheduled in the late summer / early fall.

| Flynn House Manager Retires: Thank You Ed Burke! | The Gerald Flynn House and FHT Board of Directors said goodbye to our friend, Ed Burke, earlier this summer. Ed Burke served as the live-in House Manager for over two years at the Flynn House. He retires from his position to enjoy traveling and spending more time with his grandchildren, who live off-Cape. When not mowing the Flynn House lawn, or giving residents rides to appointments, or attending AA commitments, Ed loves riding his motorcycle. He also is an avid bicycle rider, and braved Walt Disney World alone this spring with two children under the age of ten years old, his grandchildren! What a guy!? Our new Flynn House Manager, Mark Culpo, started earlier this summer. He is off to a great start. Mark works locally and in his free time enjoys spending time with his family and friends. He is an avid recreationist and works out daily. We thank Ed for his hard work and dedication to the Flynn House program. On behalf of our seven men and women who call the Flynn House their home, we wish Ed well and welcome Mark! |
