Greetings!

Spring is on its way ... we've got snowdrops pushing through the ground at the Flynn House.

We've been hard at work this winter, finalizing plans regarding our two affordable housing projects in Falmouth. Please take a minute to read on; tell us what you like, want to know more about, and how else we can serve you - the Falmouth community!

Who is Paying Attention?
Odd Fellows Hall old B&W

"Recently, I've had two experiences that caused me to question the community's general knowledge base regarding the Odd Fellows Hall.  This was troubling as I thought folks were paying attention, and yet to be honest and fair, I sure don't pay attention to everything that happens in Falmouth. So for that reason, here comes my grand effort to "inform" the public about the history and restrictions associated with the Odd Fellows Hall currently." [read more]

The Gerald Flynn House
Our Road to Recovery Through Safe, Affordable Housing
The residents of the Gerald Flynn House are busy looking forward to spring! The house, located at 170 Palmer Avenue in downtown Falmouth, has some "mature" plantings that come back to life each spring, after the winter freeze. Who doesn't smile when they see a struggling crocus or a bunch of snow drops pop out of the earth one morning?

Our program is currently full; with three middle-aged women, one young women, two young men, and a male senior, who is also a U.S. Veteran. Like so many Falmouth folk, we suffered some minor storm damage, but made it through mostly un-scarred. We'll have a spring clean-up soon and our vegetable garden will be planted later this spring.

The folks living at the Flynn House all suffer from some form of mental illness and substance abuse. We provide a safe environment to heal and settle into new, healthy routines designed to foster growth, while maintaining their valuable sobriety. Our live-in House Manager helps keep residents on track with their Individualized Service Plans, and Case Management from the Gosnold Treatment Center moves our residents forward, making progress towards eventual independent living. The program works.

Project Update: 761 Teaticket Highway & St. Marks Way
St. Mark's Way
The Falmouth Housing Trust is pleased to announce we've selected The Valle Group to build three affordable homes at the 761 Teaticket Highway site. The project includes two 3-bed, 2-bath Cape Cod-style houses and one 3-bed, 2-bath ranch-style house that will be visitable. Currently, our project team is investigating solar energy for the houses, in an effort to reduce operational costs for our new home-owners!

The Trust is under agreement on the property with the Town of Falmouth, and hopes to start the permitting phase of the project soon. In an effort to keep costs down, we're recycling plans from a previous project, with the assistance of local architect, Bill Roslansky.

For more information on the project, or to complete a ready-to-buy application, drop us a line. Stay tuned for more to come!

Falmouth Kids Making a Difference!

McAlister Joyce
This is a new column we hope to include regularly in our electronic newsletters. We here at the Falmouth Housing Trust are dedicated to keeping our town vibrant with the retention of the young and talented population. Hats off this edition to one young man who is born and bred here in Falmouth.

Volunteer, McAlister Joyce, worked last summer faithfully in the FHT office, organizing press and media clippings into a fabulous Media Log. He found time to do this between working two jobs. Mackie, as his friends call him, worked during the day at The Produce Stand in North Falmouth, and worked both the breakfast and dinner shifts at Bacari's Diner also in North Falmouth.

Mackie graduated from Falmouth High School in 2011. He is currently majoring in Computer Graphic Design at the University of Tampa, Florida. McAlister is the son of Tamara Joyce of North Falmouth and Alexander Joyce of Pocasset.

   Thanks Mackie!

Young Professionals Find It Hard to Stay on the Cape
wcai logo A group of young professionals are taking the lead to help find ways to keep their peers on Cape Cod. Part one in our original 3-part series "By The Numbers: Worries About Cape Cod's Workforce," examines reasons career-minded young people find it difficult to stay on the Cape, and explores some of the community initiatives to keep them here.
