News from the Oxford Rug Hooking School

Dear Friends,

It's been a great first few months here at the new Oxford Rug Hooking School! Students have come from as far away as California, Oklahoma, Montana, North Carolina, Florida, and Nova Scotia. I've loved having a house full of students, creativity, and laughter. We've had two powerful heat waves (unusual for Vermont!) but I'm pleased to report that we now have air conditioners in both of our classrooms and in each of our three bedrooms. Of course, now that I've bought the air conditioners the temperature hasn't gone above eighty degrees!

If you're still interested in coming this year it's not too late to sign up! There are still openings in most of my fall and winter workshops and retreats. My weekly rug hooking group also has openings, as does my October Punch Needle Teacher Certification program. The list below shows all of my September classes. If none of my scheduled classes work for you, I also offer private lessons by appointment. Please give me a call or email me for more information or to register for a class. I can be reached at (802) 462-2011 or at
amy@amyoxford.com. I'd love to have you join us!

Wishing you a very happy fall,

Punch Needle Rug Hooking Evening Classes
4 Tuesdays, September 3, 10, 17, October 1. 6:00pm-8:30pm
Level: Beginner
Tuition: $95

Students will make a 10" piece that can be used as a wall hanging or table mat and by doing this will learn all the skills necessary to make larger rugs. We'll use 100% wool rug yarn, a #9 regular Oxford Punch Needle and a series of folk art templates for our design (star, heart, flowers, animals, etc.) or design your own if you prefer. If time allows, you can enlarge your mat to 14". Materials Fee: $29. Includes yarn and monk's cloth. Punch needle ($35) and frame ($24) can be borrowed during class and purchased after class if desired. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Designing For Rug Hooking

Saturday and Sunday, September 7-8. 9am-5pm both days

Levels: Intermediate/Advanced
Tuition: $199

Have you been making hooked rugs using commercially bought patterns? Do you daydream about creating a pattern of your very own? Do you write off that idea with the thought of, "But I can't draw!"? If you answered yes to these questions then this class is for you! Bring in an idea for your design and find out how to take it from your imagination all the way onto rug backing. No drawing skills are necessary, just a rough idea of what you have in mind. We will discuss design, style, composition, layout, how to enlarge or reduce a pattern or motif, backgrounds, borders, and what makes a good rug design. Don't have a design idea? Not to worry! One fun exercise we will try is arranging small motifs to create our rug designs. When Amy purchased the McAdoo Rugs patterns they included portfolios containing hundreds of small drawings used by the designers at McAdoo Rugs including birds, animals, fish, butterflies, boats, teapots, hats, shoes, borders, and more. These treasures can be used as templates to create your own composition. This class is suitable for punch needle and traditional rug hookers.

Mother/Daughter Punch Needle Rug Hooking Class
Saturday, September 21, 9am-3pm
Level: Beginner
Taught by Amy Oxford and her daughter, Alaina Dickason Roberts
Cost: $120 per mother/daughter pair including pin making supplies and snacks.

Keep them for yourselves or give them as gifts! Alaina will teach the children while her mom teaches the grownups. Grandparents and grandchildren, fathers and sons... all combinations are welcome for this creative day and bonding experience!

Fall Foliage Rug Hooking Retreat and Dye Day

Open Workshop
Monday-Friday, September 23-27. Monday-Thursday 9am-4pm, Friday 9am-3pm
Levels: Beginner
Tuition: $385

If you've always wanted to see Vermont's fall colors and also been wanting to learn how to make punch needle rugs... then this unforgettable retreat has your name written all over it! Learn everything you need to know to create your own gorgeous rugs using The Oxford Punch Needle and gorgeous hand dyed wool rug yarns. Your instructor is a firm believer that it's always good to start small to see how you like the craft before diving into a big project! We'll start with a small 14" mat or chair pad and if you like doing this you can go on to make more chair pads or start a small rug. Many designs to choose from! Special events for this retreat include a chance to dye some of your own yarn with instructor Sara Burghoff from Violet Jane and scenic drives for "leef peeping!" We'll keep an eye on the weather and our schedule flexible, if it's a gorgeous day we just might have to knock off early to go see the beautiful autumn colors. Optional activities include a relaxing and therapeutic massage from a visiting masseuse, shopping in Middlebury, a wine tasting at a local vineyard, and morning walks in the countryside. Take this class alone or stay on to take the following September 28-29 "Quiet Class" to create a seven-day retreat. Materials Fee: Will vary depending upon project chosen. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Fall Foliage Quiet Rug Hooking Retreat
Saturday and Sunday, September 28-29. Saturday 9am-4pm, Sunday 9am-3pm
Levels: Intermediate/Advanced
Tuition: $199

Do you love taking workshops to learn new skills and enjoy the camaraderie of being with other crafters but... find it impossible to concentrate on your project while everyone is talking, joking, and laughing? This retreat is an opportunity to get the best of both worlds -- a quiet, peaceful setting to work, with time set aside to visit with your classmates. The mornings will be quiet, allowing students to work in a peaceful and meditative setting. During this time, Amy will work with each student individually to answer questions and talk with them about their project. Lunch will give everyone a chance to visit and chat and then the afternoon session will continue with more quiet time (and perhaps a nap for anyone who needs a toes-up). At 3:00 we'll break for tea and then meet together to give everyone a chance to talk about what they've been doing, what they've learned, and to ask for the group's feedback if desired. On Saturday evening students will have the option to continue working quietly or to join together in a different part of the house for a social rug hooking session. You are welcome to take this class alone or combine it with the preceding September 23-27 retreat for a seven-day getaway. Materials Fee: Will vary depending upon project chosen. A supply list will be provided upon registration.
