'To Find the Evidence'
Please distribute to others that may have an interest

Greetings

The last month of summer!  We hope you enjoyed some relaxation, although investigators - and most being small business owners, finding the time to relax is rare and appreciated.

If you had a chance to participate in the renewed National Private Investigators Day, thanks!  With more time to prepare next year we will all have a better opportunity to celebrate.  It is never too soon to plan and think of a theme.

A special thanks to the Iowa Association of Private Investigators and having Dean as the keynote presenter for their 2014 annual conference.  The attendance was great and everyone was exceptional and very welcoming.  Fun was had by all!

PPIAC Death Investigation Training
Its not too late - join us Friday 08/29/2014!

Our agency is again proud to support the Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado (www.PPIAC.org) with the help of the Colorado Public Defender's Office for a day of Death Case Investigation on August 29, 2014.

All investigators and attorneys involved in personal injury and death in civil and criminal litigation are encouraged to attend.  Space is limited and all proceeds will be used to develop additional non-profit training opportunities.  Our agency is donating time and resources and has no benefit from this event.

Agency News and Updates

PI Magazine 'A look into the Practical Methods for Legal Investigations'

by Dean A. Beers, CLI, CCDI

The current issue of PI Magazine has several articles by friends and colleagues, particularly if you are a surveillance specialist.  Also in this issue is Dean's latest article, based on the investigative concepts of his book: (www.PracticalMethodsForLegalInvestigationis.com).

You can find key points of this article and book in our recent commentary, 'Quint-Essential Concepts of Litigation for Legal Investigators' at http://www.deathcasereview.com/afi-llc-blog/quint-essential-concepts-of-litigation-for-legal-investigators

Current Commentary from the AFI-LLC blog

In July we posted new commentaries on our agency blog, also two are discussed in the upcoming episode of Dean's Facts & Forensics when he has Conversations with Karen.

Personal Self Defense in the Rocky Mountain West

http://www.deathcasereview.com/afi-llc-blog/personal-self-defense-in-the-rocky-mountain-west

Some states have a 'Stand Your Ground Law' - such as Florida. Colorado and Wyoming both have Castle Doctrine Laws, and both are very similar. In Colorado and Wyoming it is your state Constitutional right to own and carry a firearm - Colorado and Wyoming both allow open carry, possession in your home and vehicle, and concealed carry. Colorado requires a permit, and Wyoming does not - but will issue - a permit. Both are 'shall issue' states.

Taking Identity Theft to a Personal Level
http://www.deathcasereview.com/afi-llc-blog/taking-identity-theft-to-a-personal-level
Identities are not borrowed, and neither are the financial gains, they are stolen.  Identity theft has existed since the realization by man that sometimes crime does pay.  For each advance in preventing identity theft, those determined to accomplish their means at the cost of others develop new methods.

Global Investigators Media Group (GIMG.tv) with Facts & Forensics

Vacation of most of the GIMG.tv hosts has delayed the recent shows.  We're back and my latest podcast is at http://gimg.tv/004-facts-forensics

This podcast features a discussion with Karen on the 'Personal Self Defense in the Rocky Mountain West' and 'Taking Identity Theft to a Personal Level'.  Be sure and continue listening for special guest Mark Gillespie, TCI.  an expert in Forensics and Investigations - you DO NOT want to miss this important segment.  We are planning a third soon!

Each Facts & Forensics opens with Dean discussing related topics from national news and updates from associations.  The second segment is Conversations with Karen, in which they discuss the Facts and Forensics of highly publicized equivocal death cases and other topics in the news.  The final segment is a special guest segment, Dean and a forensic expert will discuss how their expertise can help listeners.

NCISS Legislative Alerts

NCISS REGULATORY ALERT: CALL TO ACTION Unfair Licensing Requirements

The FTC has begun challenging licensing regimes in states where such regulation does not appear to serve the public interest, and welcomes examples of where regulation extends beyond any reasonable public purpose, but instead serves to protect the economic interests of a few entrenched practitioners.

We believe that this is a situation calling for the input of NCISS members from across America. We are asking you, our members, to call attention to how this situation impacts our ability to conduct business.  We need examples of state-based regulation of private investigators that exceeds the boundaries of common sense or the public interest, acting instead to protect the business of entrenched practitioners.  Where are NCISS members practicing, where the fox is guarding the proverbial henhouse?

Your action is needed.  Please see the full NCISS Legislative Alert for details of how you can help, members and non-members of NCISS:

The Quint-Essential Qualities of a Professional Investigator...
Skills Appropriate for the Assignment
Law firms and medical offices specialize - Professional Investigators also specialize.  Their casework and continuing education should also be in your specialized areas.

Experience and Knowledge
Professional Investigators strive to maintain and further these. All professions have requirements of continuing education.  The CLI program requires extensive compliance with continuing education.

Responsible and Ethical Conduct
Every component of the investigation has evidentiary considerations. Professional Investigators hold themselves to a higher standard and leaves no question as to the admissibility of their evidence.  Information without ethics is not evidence.

Effective Communication
Professional Investigators maintain communication with the attorney, client, witnesses, and other key persons in the investigation.  Moreover, reports are the product of an organized investigation and should reflect the work product you expect.

Keyword - 'Professional'
Honesty, Integrity & Intelligence.  These define Professional Investigators and gives you the confidence that your case is in competent and skilled hands.
In Closing...
Passing of friend and colleague Stacy Smallwood

PPIAC and NCISS, and the investigative community, lost a friend. It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our good friend and a PPIAC board member Stacy Smallwood who passed away in late July. Stacy was a great investigator and a friend to a lot of us, he will certainly be missed. Please keep Stacy's family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers.

Here is what one colleague recently said about our Death Investigation for Private Investigators distance learning course:
"I just finished your medicolegal death investigations for private investigators course. I must admit it was one of the best written courses I have taken in a long time. Not sure what I got on the test but I did get a certificate of completion. I truly enjoyed the content and managed to learn quite a bit as well. As far as the usefulness of the information I have already found two of my current cases that parts of the course provided me additional information as well as different routes of investigation that I may not have thought of or been aware of. Please accept my thanks and appreciation for your course. Thanks" (Curtis Burkett - Curtis Burkett & Associates Investigations)
