Greetings We are excited to have learned of an effort to renew National Private Investigators Day! We participated in the first, in October 2002, that was initiated by former PI Magazine owner and editor, Bob Mackowiak. We learned of this new effort from colleagues in Australia at Private Investigators Now. -- When? July 24th - commemorating the birth year of Eugene Francois Vidocq, the very first Private Investigator who founded the first known detective Agency in 1833. -- What can you do? We have put some information at this link - http://www.deathcasereview.com/national-pi-day.html. This is an effort that will enhance you and our profession - several associations are participating, from the state to the international level. You can contact your elected officials from the local to national level, and host informational gatherings. The theme is 'Passionate Search for the Facts'. Please don't delay in getting support of your associations, colleagues, clients and elected officials. Investigators' Theorem We learned of this after developing our Investigators' Theorem: 'As investigators, we are particularly keen to theorem that there is only one answer for the truth and multiple answers for the lies. Similarly, there is often one path to the truth and multiple paths to the lies.' Our mission is to find the right path for our clients. National Association of Legal Investigators 2014 Conference!

PI Now - 'Investigating Innocence Cases with Caution'
by Karen S. Beers, BSW, CCDI
Karen's latest article has been published by PI Now (www.PINow.com)
Unless your head is buried in the sand, or you do not have the Internet, or perhaps you do not even own a television set, then you have seen the many news stories of the innocent individuals who have been released from prison. Most of the releases have been due to DNA evidence that have proven their innocence. Personally I think this is wonderful, and every story I have read about these releases have made me feel happiness for the innocent, yet saddened that they were forced to spend so many years of their lives innocently confined to prison, separated from their loved ones, unable to live the life of freedom they deserved to live. Continued at http://www.pinow.com/articles/1853/investigate-innocence-cases-with-caution PI Magazine
You might want to make sure you get the next copy of PI Magazine. More next month! Global Investigators Media Group (GIMG.tv) with Facts & Forensics
Each Facts & Forensics opens with Dean discussing related topics from national news and updates from associations. The second segment is Conversations with Karen, in which they discuss the Facts and Forensics of highly publicized equivocal death cases in the news. The final segment is a special guest segment, Dean and a forensic expert will discuss how their expertise can help listeners.

Special Announcement:
Mandatory Licensing of Private Investigators - to be signed by the governor!
At AFI-LLC we were chartered licensed investigators under the voluntary program since July 2012, expiring this year with the repeal of voluntary.
In May of this year, with the dedicated work of the Professional Private Investigators Association of Colorado, the licensing committee and supporters - mandatory licensing passed the legislature. It is reported that the governor will sign the bill by June 6th.
Associations are as strong as their membership and leaders, and a great deal takes place on a daily basis that is simply unrecognized. These accomplishments often take a great deal of personal and professional time and sacrifice, hundreds of hours and even days.
Details are at http://www.deathcasereview.com/1/post/2014/05/update-mandatory-pi-licensing-in-colorado-headed-to-governor.html

NCISS and State Legislative Awareness Monitoring on PI's Declassified! Originally aired on May 5th, the archive is at http://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/77751/national-legislative-program-launched Founded in 1975, The National Council of Investigation and Security Services (NCISS) has fought restrictive legislation and governmental regulations with unintended consequences on behalf of private investigators and security professionals before Congress and governmental agencies. Today, NCISS announces two new programs to assist security professionals and private investigators expand their legislative knowledge and influence. Tune in to hear James Huckabee, Tom Shamshak, and Dean Beers, all NCISS Vice Presidents, discuss these exciting new developments, along with NCISS Legislative Advocate, Keith Nelson from the Washington DC firm of Lobbyit. Dean is the 3rd VP of NCISS, and will be joined by 1st VP James Huckabee and 2nd VP Tom Shamshak, as well as the new NCISS legislative advocate, Keith Nelson from LobbyIt. The National Council of Investigation & Security Services (www.NCISS.org) represents investigative and security professionals nationwide to monitor and act upon federal legislation that my hinder or benefit our professions. NCISS has expanded the State Association Advisory Board (SAAB) with the new State Legislative Awareness Monitoring (SLAM) initiative - the SAAB / SLAM Program. The three VPs have been tasked with bringing this grassroots up to speed with assigned Regional Directors and At-Large Directors. This has become both the defining task of the VP SAAB / SLAM Committee, and goal of NCISS to assist our members and associations at the state level with legislation that may impact them locally.
Problems with North Carolina Medical Examiner System This was a six part series on the issues both the NC Medical Examiner and families face. For the ME, it boils down to funding and training. For the families, answers and closure are at issue. Together, these problems are common and complex. http://m.journalnow.com/news/state_region/problems-found-with-nc-medical-examiner-findings/article_45636944-deea-11e3-b716-0017a43b2370.html?mode=jqm Many states with lay coroner systems and part-time 'investigators' pay a flat fee - and it is very detrimental. This is also why we recently published "A Survivors' Guide to Understanding Death Investigations" - a very slim version of how official death investigations are typically conducted - www.UnderstandingDeathInvestigations.com
Although we have a professional purpose in our services, we do this because of stories exactly like those in North Carolina. The trauma to families is known only to them. Their closure is absent. As Voltaire said, "To the living we owe respect, to the dead we owe the truth." Visit this June 2013 commentary, addressing these complex issues at http://www.deathcasereview.com/afi-llc-blog/proper-death-investigation-protocols-vital-to-families We offer seminars and training for PIs and associations, from seminars and conference presentations to our Death Investigation for Private Investigators distance learning course so that PIs can help families in exactly these situations. To benefit state associations and their members, we co-brand these with the associations and offer a 15% discount to the member and donate, in the member's name, another 15% to the state association. Please contact our agency for details. |
The Quint-Essential Qualities of a Professional Investigator... | Skills Appropriate for the Assignment Law firms and medical offices specialize - Professional Investigators also specialize. Their casework and continuing education should also be in your specialized areas.
Experience and Knowledge Professional Investigators strive to maintain and further these. All professions have requirements of continuing education. The CLI program requires extensive compliance with continuing education.
Responsible and Ethical Conduct Every component of the investigation has evidentiary considerations. Professional Investigators hold themselves to a higher standard and leaves no question as to the admissibility of their evidence. Information without ethics is not evidence.
Effective Communication Professional Investigators maintain communication with the attorney, client, witnesses, and other key persons in the investigation. Moreover, reports are the product of an organized investigation and should reflect the work product you expect.
Keyword - 'Professional' Honesty, Integrity & Intelligence. These define Professional Investigators and gives you the confidence that your case is in competent and skilled hands.

This will be an information packed and fast paced series of presentations. This distance learning course provides the insight necessary to understanding the importance of injury causation to the death investigation. This will transition into the reviewing and comprehending the autopsy findings presented in the final autopsy report.
If you are involved in legal investigations of civil, criminal or probate litigation, this is a valuable course.
Warning: includes graphic images Here is what one colleague recently said about our Death Investigation for Private Investigators distance learning course: "I just finished your medicolegal death investigations for private investigators course. I must admit it was one of the best written courses I have taken in a long time. Not sure what I got on the test but I did get a certificate of completion. I truly enjoyed the content and managed to learn quite a bit as well. As far as the usefulness of the information I have already found two of my current cases that parts of the course provided me additional information as well as different routes of investigation that I may not have thought of or been aware of. Please accept my thanks and appreciation for your course. Thanks" (Curtis Burkett - Curtis Burkett & Associates Investigations)
