Small Group on Coates Book Continues
A group of 12 people has been meeting to discuss the book Between the World and Me by Te-Nehisi Coates. It is a book written in the form of a letter from a man to his 15 year-old son, about being a black man in America, in light of recent public attention on police killings of unarmed black men. We have had healthy conversations about racism in America and how we respond as people of faith. We will meet one final time on Wednesday September 21st to discuss ways we might be called to individually and collectively work for change. Talk with Andy Schwiebert, Bettie Teel and group participants to hear how our conversations have been so far.

Welcome New Members!
Two weeks ago we welcomed three new members into our community during our Sunday morning worship. Joey and Heather Bland have been worshipping with us for some months and come with their two sons - Ike and Jack. Joey works as an actor and Heather is the director of a not for profit that does advocacy and relief work for women who are survivors of sex trafficking in the Phillipines. We also welcomed John Escherich, a resident of Pasadena who grew up coming to this church with his parents some 45 years ago. Now an adult, John is happy to renew some friendships and start new ones as he returns to worship and other programs of our church. Please take the time to introduce yourself to these new members and ask if there is some way in which you can include them in the life and work of our faith community.
Aid Africa Forum and Lunch
We were privileged last Sunday to hear from Meagan VanDeventer about her trip to Uganda this past summer as part of the work of our mission partner Aid Africa. After a wonderful African-themed luncheon, Meagan shared a moving video of her time with refugees north of Lira and Kampala. Aid Africa Director Peter Keller, Irene Keller and Elizabeth Lanski supported the presentation, and would remind us that we have the opportunity to support the work of Aid Africa by attending a fundraising dinner later this Fall on Saturday November 13th at 5PM at Luminarias Restaurant - a charming Mexican restaurant in Monterey Park. See the Touchstone in coming weeks for more details.
Flowers For Worship
We have two openings remaining if you wish to purchase flowers for our worship services this Fall - October 2nd or November 13th. Please sign up on the flower chart in the hallway outside the Parlor Kitchen and pre-pay Nina in the church office with a $40 check. Nina will order an arrangement in honor or memory of the person(s) you designate. If you choose to bring your own arrangement, please note that on the chart and confirm your plans the week before with Nina in our church
