Creative Genius!
spring | 2016
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Anyone remember that question? We may have all said things that didn't end up happening, like astronaut or ballerina, but even grown-ups can still think about this every now and again.

The truth is that we are always in the process of creating ourselves. The choices we make every day shape who we are and the world around us. We're also never done growing up and it's never too late to make your dream (or your next dream) come true!

In this issue, we're hoping to spark some creativity and kindle some passion! We have ways to approach everything you do with a creative mindset, opportunities to create a better community, and musings from Paul about finding creativity in every day life.

Ready? Let's dive in!

Tips from the Pro
I'm one of the lucky ones. I have found a career that allows me to do something I love that expresses creativity, but also helps make the world a better place in a concrete (and drywall) way. Building is the ultimate creative job because you make something for people that is real and useful, but also beautiful - the home they live in every day and raise their family in.

Great design and attentive craftsmanship are creative challenges that I've been enjoying since I was a teenager. Just like with any creative endeavor, part of the satisfaction is working to improve and get better at it. After 30 years, I've honed my skills until I am now proud to call myself a Pro.

My career has also given me other opportunities to create good in the world. On estimate calls or on the jobsite, I always create opportunities to be friendly and talk to people. Over the years, I have heard some amazing, inspiring stories from just being willing to listen to those around me. I have also made some lifelong friends by creating relationships where there could have just been a business transaction.

I also have had the life-changing chance to use my skills to create a real difference in the lives of people in Guatemala through several missionary trips. I used my skills as a builder to create homes, wells, and other essential projects, alongside my fellow church members and my family. These experiences brought us all together, as well as giving us the chance to create relationships with new friends across the world.

In my life, I have found that every day is a chance to create something. It may be something like a well-built wall, or it may be a happy moment in another person's life. Everything you create helps make the world brighter and better. Just look for the opportunities and you will start to see them all around!

God creates us all with gifts, talents, dreams and passion. With that comes our creativity and I have been blessed to use mine to chase after my dreams. But one thing I realized over the years it that it's not about me; it's about Him--it's not about my creativity, but what I allow Him to do in me and through me for my family, friends, customers, and the community in which I live. That is what brings me the most joy and helping others see the gifts, talents, dreams and passions they were created with. Don't ever sell yourself short -- God's word says everyone was created in His own image and just think, He created the world. It's never too late to dream!

Art is Life

No need to be a starving artist when you can be a chef instead! All kinds of jobs can be creative that you may not think of that way: scientist, teacher, architect, builder, actor, inventor, designer, and the list goes on.

We're also living in the Information Age when we can learn a new skill every day if we want and express ourselves in more ways than ever. Want to learn to knit, bake, paint, or play an instrument? Just hop on YouTube and get started!

In fact, any field can really benefit from a little creativity and some new ideas every once in a while. Brainstorming new approaches, trying out new methods, working in teams, thinking outside of the box -- all of these activities can improve how we do what we do every day, no matter how long we've been doing it.

Some habits of creative people that we can all adopt include being passionate about our work, always looking to get better, and not being afraid to make mistakes. Instead of seeing problems, we can start making solutions and create a better world today!

Do you have any creative ideas or projects you're proud of? Shoot us a note or drop by our Facebook page and share your accomplishments or works-in-progress!

In the Community

Love Fullerton Serve Day is coming up next month on Saturday, April 30th. This great program helps people organize and find ways of volunteering in their community.

And as you give your time and effort, you'll surely get something back too. You and your family can get out and enjoy the city while meeting new friends and neighbors who also want to help.

There are opportunities for all ages and talents, from visiting seniors, to planting trees, to blood donation. Whatever you can give, every little bit helps make Fullerton an EVEN BETTER place to live! : )
