Attention Treasurers
Important Federal Tax Return Due Date - February 15
If you filed an extension last November, your tax return is due this Friday, February 15th. It is critical to file your return on time; under new IRS rules, missing it for a few years will invalidate your 501C(3) status, which would be a big problem for your PTA. Smaller PTAs (gross receipts under $50,000) can file the ePostcard, which is very quick and easy; larger PTAs need to do the 990EZ or the full 990. You can see the thresholds here.
The National Center for Charitable Statistics at the Urban Institute has a site, which is very helpful in preparing the 990EZ or 990; it is free if your gross receipts are under $100,000; and a $35 contribution is asked if you are over that amount.
Tatia at the state office can also help you with questions regarding filling out the forms. Contact her at:tvasbinder@wastatepta.org
PTAs can get Quickbooks and other software at huge discounts
If your PTA needs to update or get new software, Techsoup is a great resource. Microsoft, Intuit, Adobe and other software companies donate programs to Techsoup for distribution to non-profits. You have to jump through some hoops (provide your IRS determination letter, etc), but it is a great deal. The Premiere edition of Quickbooks, which normally retails for $400 is available to non-profits for $40- that's 1/10th the normal price. Here's the link.
