Dear PTA and PTSA Leaders,

I'd like to welcome Linnea Fichter as the Seattle Council PTSA's new Legislative Chair. Linnea is also serving as Treasurer of the Friends of Hawthorne PTA.  We are grateful she has stepped into the Legislative Chair role and we look forward to working with her. Linnea will be coordinating events for Focus Day coming up on Thursday, January 24. You can contact Linnea at legislative@seattlecouncilptsa.org

We would also like to congratulate Dunlap Elementary on the approval of their application for affiliation as a new PTA. They held their first charter meeting on December 18.

Have a peaceful holiday break.

Sincerely,

Lauren McGuire

SCPTSA President

News from OEO: Tips for School Safety in the New Year

-From the OEO

The Office of the Education Ombudsman staff wishes to express our heartfelt condolences to the families, educators and community members of Newtown, Connecticut for the devastating loss they have experienced.

Many parents and students have contacted our office to share their feelings, concerns and grief. We are heartbroken but believe that this tragedy can lead to a renewed commitment to work together and find ways to ensure the safety and well-being of all children.

A frequent question we have been asked is "What can we do so that this tragedy doesn't happen again?"  While no one can ensure anyone's safety anywhere, we do believe that as educators, families and communities we should take all possible steps to prevent and be ready to respond if a violent incident were to happen during school time. The most important step is to move from denial: "this will never happen here/to us" to preparation and a plan of action.

Blanket and Coat Drive at Schools

-Sponsored by Seattle Education Association

With the cold winter weather upon us, many of our families struggle just to keep warm. Staff and families can bring donations of warm blankets and coats to schools through Monday, January 14.

If you would like to volunteer to get more involved with families in transition, please email Phyllis Campano, Vice President of SEA, at pcampano@washingtonea.org

Come See the Reflections Art Exhibit!!!

The Reflections Art Exhibit is on display at Seattle Center. It is located upstairs from the main stage in the Armory.  The exhibit will run from December 10 through January 6.

All of the Reflections submissions can be viewed here.

Save the date: on Sunday, January 6 from 2-4pm, on the Seattle Center Main Stage, Superintendant of Seattle Public Schools, José

Banda, and Managing Director of Seattle International Film Festival, Deborah Person, will help us celebrate and recognize all our young  artists.

Parenting Calendar from the Puget Sound Adlerian Society (PSAS)

The winter 2013 issue of The Parenting Calendar is now available
online. It lists all the parenting courses starting in January through March and all of the ongoing support groups that we are aware of
in the central Puget Sound area--as well as parent coaches and
mentors, online resources, and facilitator trainings.

The calendar is a resource for parents, counselors, school
counselors, social workers, and other people interested in improving
family relationships.  We hope it will be useful to you and would
appreciate your sharing it with others.  We have a tiny budget, and
word-of-mouth is the best advertising!
