Greetings!

Welcome to Midland High School!

I am excited to welcome you to the 2013-2014 school year.

Students will report to advisory Monday, August 26 by 8:30 AM. In advisory, they will receive schedules and go over locations of rooms and the layout of the the campus. Seniors and juniors with waivers MUST report to advisory in order to receive their schedules. A link to our advisory list (alpha by last name range and room) can be found below.

In the event of an error in scheduling, students will be collected from advisory and taken to the counseling center for corrections.

In the event that a schedule is not what the student requested, the student will be required to attend the schedule until counselors can review it. Counselors will be available in the trophy room at the main entrance to look at scheduling requests beginning Tuesday from 11:20 to 12:10 daily the first week.

Often, requested courses fill to capacity. When this happens, the schedule is completed using the second and third choices students and parents listed during spring registration. It should be noted, seniors needing credits followed by juniors and sophomores are the order of student priority in the registration process.

Students and parents should remember that this year we will have lunch after 3rd period. Our bell schedule can be found below.

New enrollees will go to the main office area. New enrollees should bring proof of residence (current utility bill), social security card, shot records, birth certificate and last report card and/or transcript from their previous school.

Thanks for signing up for our newsletter. Please tell your friends to sign up if you find this information useful. In addition, we have a strong Twitter following and I encourage you to look into that if you do not already have an account.
Sincerely,

parent log in
MISD has changed the grading program from Gradespeed to TxGradebook.  Parents will have access to similar features in the new program.  The choice to change programs was based on using the best interface possible for teachers, students and parents.  Look for more information related to creating a log-in coming soon.

 House Bill 5 (Class of '15 +)

Classes of 2015 and beyond will need to pay attention to House Bill 5 (HB 5), signed into legislation this summer.  HB 5 changes graduation requirements as well as testing requirements.  We do not have all of the information we need in order to make needed adjustments, as the State Board of Education (SBEC) and TEA (Texas Education Agency) will now hand down rules specific to the new legislation.  What we do know for sure is that required testing for graduation has gone from 15 end of course tests (EOCs) to 5.  The 5 tests are:
  • Algebra I
  • English I*
  • English II*
  • US History
  • Biology

HB 5 did away with the 15% requirement for EOCs to be counted as part of the yearly grade in the course.  The bill also changed graduation plans somewhat.  Due to the timing of the bill, MHS will not deviate from graduation plans that students are already following until we are given final rules and regulations on specific courses.  SBEC and TEA has until January of 2014 to release these new rules.  Students will remain in courses assigned and chosen during spring registration aligned to existing degree plans in order to ensure graduation requirements are met.

*English I and English II are new tests that combine reading and writing into one test. Students that passed reading OR writing in either have until December to pass the second test. After December they will have to take the new combined English I or II test.
