"Moshav"

Saturday, July 5, 2014

Often regarded as one of the first groups to combine Jewish music with a rock sound, as elements of alternative rock, folk, funk, and reggae appear in their songs.  Internationally acclaimed American/Israeli rock group Moshav began when childhood friends Yehuda (vocals, percussion) and Duvid (vocals, guitar) made music together on Moshav Mevo Modiin in Israel.

Ojai Concerts Series

Venice Institute of Contemporary Art (ViCA) and Porch Gallery Ojai in Association with the Sam Francis Foundation Present "Water Works"
July 5 - August 17, 2014
Curated by Juri Koll with Catalog Essays by Peter Frank & Shana Nys Dambrot
Featuring works by The Dark Bob, Fatemeh Burnes, Sam Erenberg, Kio Griffith, Gloriane Harris, Juri Koll, Barbara Kolo, KuBO, Jayme Odgers, Kirk Pedersen, Kate Register, and Karrie Ross.
The artists in this show use watercolor, inks, and other liquid media for a variety of reasons - some love the risk of not being able to alter the result once it hits the paper. Others have a more formal reason for the process. Some use the medium as a contemplative, almost reverential experience, or for "quiet meditation or being present in the moment", as Shana Nys Dambrot says. All these motivations inspire these works,
and engage the audience with the here and now, regardless of when the work was completed. Many of the artists have been influenced in some way by Japanese Sumi painters or modern artists such as Sam Francis.

Directed by Rick Kuhlman
John Steinbeck's brilliant novel was turned into a play while still on the best seller list and it won the highest honor of its time. The story of a deep friendship among migrant workers who dream of a better life, but are thwarted by prejudice and cruelty, still resonates in today's world. It came from Steinbeck's own experience as a 'hobo' (HOmeward BOund).
