David Lindley

Saturday, January 11, 2014 @ 7:30 pm
Matilija Auditorium, Ojai
Multi-instrumentalist David Lindley performs music that redefines the word "eclectic." Lindley, well known for his many years as the featured accompanist with Jackson Browne, and leader of his own band El Rayo-X, has long championed the concept of world music. The David Lindley electro-acoustic performance effortlessly combines American folk, blues, and bluegrass traditions with elements from African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish musical sources. Lindley incorporates an incredible array of stringed instruments including but not limited to Kona and Weissenborn Hawaiian lap steel guitar, Turkish saz and chumbus, Middle Eastern oud, and Irish bouzouki. The eye-poppingly clad "Mr. Dave's" uncanny vocal mimicry and demented sense of humor make his onstage banter a highlight of the show.

Using his own voice to create characters and sound effects, tell stories and make his puppets sing, Hobey's performances feature his handmade original signature, "Foamies", animated, carved-foam rod puppets. He performs unmasked, in full view in his roles as MC, engaged storyteller, puppeteer and animator, creating a seamless, magical and hypnotic dance between the audience, the puppeteer, the life-like puppets and the artistic scenery and often incorporates music into his productions.

"Twelfth Night"; or, "What You Will"
January 24 - February 16, 2014
Ojai Art Center
113 S. Montgomery St. Ojai

Comic confusions are the norm in this comedy of disguised identities, false letters, spurned lovers, a clown and a ludicrous duel. Add to the mix a shipwreck, a pair of identical twins, a former pirate, a besotted uncle, a sour butler, and a goofy suitor and you have the makings of one of Shakespeare's most delightful comedies. Love, of course, is at the heart of the comedy. In "Twelfth Night" Shakespeare weaves a story that blends rich poetry with outrageous comic antics to create a brave new world of joy and love fulfilled.

The Tannahill Weavers
"Mystical and rollicking Highlander's Celtic music"
Friday, February 14, 2014 @ 7 pm
Ojai Valley Woman's Club
Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the group has made an international name for its special brand of Scottish music, blending the beauty of traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms. The Tannahill Weavers began to attract attention when founding members Roy Gullane and Phil Smillie added the full-sized highland bagpipes to the on-stage presentations, the first professional Scottish folk group to successfully do so. The combination of the powerful pipe solos, Roy's driving guitar backing and lead vocals, and Phil's ethereal flute playing breathed new life into Scotland's vast repertoire of traditional melodies and songs.
The Tannahill Weavers diverse repertoire reflects the duality of Scotland's musical heritage.  It embraces both the mystical quality of the Highlander's Celtic music, and the rollicking, sometimes even brawling qualities of the Lowlander's Anglo-Scots tunes.  The Tannahill Weavers' arrangements blend the beauty of the traditional melodies with the power of modern rhythms.  The penetrating sound of the Highland bagpipes is a thread of ancient memory running through it all.

Ojai Concert Series
"The April Verch Band "
"Energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating fiddling and dazzling step dancing"
Thursday March 27th, 2014 @ 7:00 pm
Ojai Valley Woman's Club
April Verch has never sounded more comfortable in her skin than she does now, in the second decade of her career as an internationally touring Canadian fiddler, step dancer and singer-songwriter. Her ninth album, Bright Like Gold, captures a woman who's fleshed out her identity and is in full command of her gifts, a woman who's grown from a prodigy into an enduring artist-one of music's most unforgiving public transitions-with grace and grit to spare.
She's of a generation far more likely to have spent its formative years taking in MTV than taking part in any sort of traditional music scene, and yet practically from birth she was immersed in folk music and dance from her native Ottawa Valley, a melting pot of Franco-Celtic flavors brought by the hard-working loggers who settled the area.
The April Verch Band-rounded out by bassist and clawhammer banjo player Cody Walters and guitarist Hayes Griffin, who has a Masters in jazz improv from the New England Conservatory-is an energetic, virtuosic, tradition-celebrating outfit, not to mention one that's not soon forgotten when they depart the stage. It doesn't hurt that the thrilling grand finale involves Verch fiddling and step dancing-and often executing two entirely different intricate rhythmic patterns-at once.
