From the Principal

Dear Lafayette Families-

Wow.  What an incredible start to our year!  After several years of planning, 16 months of construction, countless hours of meetings, decisions, contractors, subcontractors, trailers, metal walkways, blizzards, tents, and so much more - we did it.  We successfully opened our 2016-2017 school year in our incredible new school building.  What a day it was!

Thank you to everyone for your patience and grace at drop off.  After a smooth morning drop off, teachers and students spent the day getting to know one another, classmates, and the building.  As I walked through the building, I saw smiling faces all around.  I am beyond confident in the incredible work our teachers do with our students, not just the first day but every day. We have hit the ground running!

On Tuesday, students will go to our "SAMM" Assemblies.  "SAMM" is our school wide, positive behavior support structure.  It stands for "Speak Mindfully, Act Mindfully, and Move Mindfully."  We actively teach the children the positive expectations in every aspect of the building and then celebrate when we achieve those expectations. We also incorporate our Peace of Mind curriculum and social emotional teaching in "Peace Class."  If you hear your students talking about "SAMM" tickets...

Letter from the Editor

For those of you new to Lafayette, the Tuesday Bulletin is the communications arm of the Lafayette Home and School Association. It's where you will find important information from HSA officers and teachers and staff on news, events, and fundraisers at Lafayette. It's also where to turn for information on after-school curricular activities and volunteer opportunities at the school and within the community.

The "Community Notices" section of each bulletin, akin to a classified-ad section, is where families can submit up to two ads per semester. The ads must have a clear Lafayette connection. We do not accept ads for most commercial businesses or real estate. For the convenience of families, we do post ads for camps, classes and after-school activities that take place at Lafayette and within the community. Please note that these programs are not run by Lafayette or the HSA.

To meet our deadlines, editors need all submissions e-mailed by the previous Friday. Notices should include your name, phone number, e-mail address, as well as connection to Lafayette.

Thank you to parent editors Miriam Van Dyck, Gayle Moseley, Sheryl-Ann Gayle, Katya Svirina, and Sophie Hanrahan for joining me in producing the Bulletin once again this year, which will be my 11th and final year as editor.

Teresa G. Gionis,Tuesday Bulletin editor

Calling All Babysitters!

We're compiling listings of neighborhood babysitters for the Lafayette Directory. This is intended for neighborhood students--usually Lafayette alums or siblings--who will be available for weekend, evening, and other casual babysitting. The listings are free, but please only submit a listing if you expect to be reasonably available, and limit the entry to a few sentences at most. Include your name, age, phone number and/or email address, as well as any restrictions (such as what days you are available or what age group you want to babysit). Please email submissions or questions to Holly Idelson

Calling all Lafayette Runners!

The Cross Country (XC) season at Lafayette is just around the corner. Cross Country is a sport that emphasizes sportsmanship, teamwork, and a good work ethic. Throughout the season, runners are taught proper running form, how to manage a consistent running pace, and how to set personal fitness goals.
In order to participate, all runners
must be in 4th or 5th grade and have all paperwork completed by the start of the season. Paperwork includes: a current physical conducted within 12 months of the last day of the season (November 1, 2016) and provide a copy of the DC Universal Health Certificate/ Physical Form, the Club Sports Consent Form, and the Emergency Treatment Form. All forms can be found here.
Please scan and email completed forms to Cara Kruse-Hoppe no later than September 1, 2016. Include your runner's name in the subject line of the email. We will also be accepting forms and signing up volunteers during Back to School Night.

We look forward running with you!
Coaches Campbell, DeMaria, and Hoppe
