From the HSA

Welcome to our special year-end edition of the Lafayette Tuesday Bulletin. Thank you all for a wonderful school year. We hope you and your family have a wonderful break. The HSA will be meeting a few times over the summer to get ready for back to school. If you have always wanted to learn more about helping out at Lafayette, we would be happy to meet you for a drink or connect you with other interested folks. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our Co-Presidents Shannon Behm and Chris Lisi.  And thanks again for all you did to make this year at Lafayette so special.

And don't forget - the Main Office is moving to Alice Deal Middle School, on Nebraska Avenue, for the summer. The phone number will stay the same.

Don't Forget to Order Your School Supplies from School Toolbox by Friday, June 24

This year, Lafayette Elementary has partnered with a program called School Toolbox. School Toolbox allows families to order school supplies for the beginning of the year to be school suppliessent directly to Lafayette. Lafayette teachers have each put all of their requests into the Toolbox so all you need to do is order!

Orders must be placed by June 24; otherwise, the supplies will just be sent to your homes directly instead of the school.

Please click here for a flyer with all of the information you need or click here to go to directly to the website. All you have to do is register, and then enter Lafayette Elementary and your child's name and grade.

Congratulations to the Lafayette Class of 2016

The Lafayette Class of 2016 held their promotion ceremony on  Wednesday, June 15, at Alice Deal Middle School.

Teachers, room parents, and staff organized a very special event complete with a video slide show, a certificate ceremony, a
proces
sional parade, and guest speakers including Mayor Muriel Bowser and Ward 4 Council Member Brandon Todd. Dr Broquard announced at the event that HSA, DGS, and the Fun Committee had teamed up to save bricks from the old Lafayette building and engraved each 5th grader's name onto them as a keepsake of their time at Lafayette. Dr. Broquard also presented bricks to the Mayor and Council Member Todd. After the ceremony, families and students gathered in the Deal Cafeteria to enjoy cake and lemonade, courtesy of the 5th grade room parents. It was a very special event for a very special class. Congratulations to all our 5th graders. We will miss you at Lafayette but we are so proud all of you accomplished.

A Salute to Our Departing Teachers and Staff

Eight wonderful teachers and staff members are departing for new adventures and will not return to Lafayette for the 2016-2017 school year.

Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation goes out to
Cheryl Phillips, Lisa Jensen, Judy Fratto, Morgan Hebert, Karly Cacibauda, Jessica Raugitinane, Librarian Judith Perlin, and Campbell Kennedy. The HSA gathered comm
ents, pictures, and tributes for their students, colleagues, and former students and published them in a special edition of Bear Facts. Check it out here.
From kindergarten to 5th grade, from 30 plus years of service to just a few wonderful years here at Lafayette, these
teachers and staff have contributed so much to make Lafayette a truly special school.

Add Your Name to Our New School

We've teamed up with Dr Broquard and our builders on a very cool new program to build a special commemorative area in our new school where current and former Lafayette families or community members can buy and engrav bricks to honor students, teachers, friends, and even special moments. Look for an email coming later this summer previewing the program.

Sales of bricks will benefit the programs that make Lafayette great.

Looking to Get Involved Next Year? Join the Lafayette Fun Committee

The Fun Committee is made up of parents from every grade who are interested in helping to plan special fun things for the students during the school year, like our Marquis de Lafayette birthday party in September or the NATS Presidents Mascots visit this past spring.

If you are interested in serving on the 2016-2017 Fun Committee, please email Jenny Backus. We will be scheduling one meeting for this summer to plan for the start of school. Feel free to email ideas too if you have a busy summer. Mark your calendars now - the Marquis De Lafayette's Birthday is on Thursday, September 6, this year!

Lafayette Families Play Second Annual Golf Tournament

It was all sunny skies and sweet shots at the 2nd Annual Lafayette Golf Tournament held this year on Father's Day at Rock Creek Park Golf Course. An annual Lafayette Auction tradition, this year's 9 hole tournament, held on the very difficult and very narrow back 9,  featured 12 pairs of a Lafayette family member and a Lafayette student.

Congratulations to Ted and Teddy Trabue who shot an impressive 39 to win both the tournament and the older best dressed division, and to Alex Finland and rising Kindergarten student Charles Finland who came in second overall and won best-dressed in the younger division. Rising 5th graders Natalie and Samantha Gordon, Marcus Han, Jack Pagano, 4th grader Liam Blick and rising 2nd grader Sophia Soto returned for a second year and even brought grandpas and uncles in honor of Father's Day.  And we were excited to welcome Myra Tanamour and Eoghan Brennan, Archie and Jack Smart, Sammy and David Jaffe, and David and Nate Ellis to the tournament for the first time. Thank you the Han, Haray, Pagano, Trabue, Minott and Gordon families for sponsoring the event. Special thanks to Cora Han and Tracey Trabue for the coffee, donuts, Gatorade, and popsicles and to Karrin Minott and the Staff of Rock Creek Golf Course who were very accommodating and creative about changing dates and start times.

Join the 2016-2017 Ways And Means Committee

The Lafayette HSA Ways and Means Committee works with parents to create, manage and design events and programs for Lafayette that support the HSA and all our great programs like art, music, mindfulness, sports, and extracurricular events. Our philosophy on the Ways and Means Committee is to recruit a strong group of parents to chair each event and program that the HSA counts on for revenue and work to help our
Event and Program Chairs recruit a committee of parents to support them. Each of the big events has a budget and a project revenue goal.

We are delighted to report we have recruited several event chairs already for 2016 -2017, including our newest recruits Michelle Moser and Edith Rankin who will be running the Fall Festival and Michelle Le. We still have positions to fill, like the HomeComing Dance Chair, and we need subcommittee chairs for each event. We are especially committed to recruiting parents from the younger grades because many of our lead volunteers have older children and will be leaving the school soon. If you are interested in helping on an event or chairing an event, please email Jenny Backus or Astrid Ruggeri or email your Event Chairs directly. Some of these jobs are very short commitments in terms of time and organization, others take more legwork and volunteers. We can help you find the right job or assignment  and we can share our budget numbers and goals as well.

We will also be hosting a happy hour this summer for folks who are around and in town to talk about the Committee and the events we have planned for 2016-2017 on Tuesday, July 12. Stay tuned for a Constant Contact with the exact place and time. Adult beverages will be provided along with babysitting. Everyone is welcome - whether you are new to the school next year or a seasoned veteran. We will also recruit next year as well but for some of our events like Homecoming and Fall Festival, we need to get started soon.

We hope you consider joining the Ways and Means team and remember, you don't have to chair an event to make a difference. We gladly welcome donations of time of any size and all our chairs would very much appreciate folks who can volunteer to work on their committees and at their events. Don't hesitate to reach out to any one of us.

Thanks for your consideration.
