Hello Lafayette Families -

Can you believe it - the last week of school?!

We want to express a heartfelt Thank You to each family within our Lafayette Community. You all are amazing! The commitment and support to our school, children and staff is overwhelming - we cannot thank you enough.

Please join us in extending a HUGE thank you to all of our Tuesday Bulletin Editors! They quietly work behind the scenes throughout the year on this weekly newsletter, so families receive the latest and greatest news from the HSA & School Administration. Kudos to: Teresa Gionis, Gayle Moseley, Sophie Hanrahan, Miriam Van Dyck, Sheryl-Ann Gayle and Katya Svirina.

Lastly, two HSA Board Member updates for SY 2016-2017 - we are excited to announce that Chris Lisi has been appointed to the open position of Co-President and Astrid Ruggeri has been appointed as a Ways & Means Co-Chair to replace Chris Lisi. Thank you both for your service!

We look forward to another great school year, as we have the opportunity to experience the beautiful, new building we have all watched this past year - as it has been built from the ground up! Keep an eye out for updates from the HSA and Dr. Broquard over the next few months.

We wish all of you a wonderful and adventurous summer with just enough relaxation thrown in - enjoy!

See you around the neighborhood -
Janine & Shannon

It was a spectacular night for Lafayette writers last Wednesday night when the winners of the 2016 Lafayette Essay Contest read their winning essays aloud at a special reception hosted by Lafayette annual sponsor Barstons Child's Play. Organized by 3rd Grade ELA Teacher Blake Yedwab, 4th Grade ELA Teacher Meg DeMaria and 5th Grade Teacher Annie Campbell, the Lafayette Essay contest was open to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Many other teachers and staff helped judge the essays. The winning essays were funny, smart, provocative and incredibly well written. Congratulations to all our winners. A capacity crowd of proud teachers, parents and friends came out to cheer on the winners and enjoy juice, wine and special "reading and book" cookies baked by a Lafayette alum. A Special Shout-Out to the 2016-2017 Lafayette Fun Committee

As we all know, this has been a different kind of year for Lafayette but thanks to some incredibly dedicated and creative parents, it's also been a year of FUN.

For the first time ever, Lafayette had it's own FUN COMMITTEE, made up of parents from every grade, whose mission was to look for ways to brighten the mood at Lafayette while we were in trailers and put smiles on the faces of our students, teachers, neighbors and staff. And it was a whopping success. All year long this team of creative geniuses came up with events and activities that made this year so special. Here is just a sampling of what they did.

Decorating the front of the school with blue and yellow personalized ribbons on the first day; helping to provide extra staff to help everyone find their way to school during our first week; delivering flowers to the "Envelope families who live around the school"; throwing a heck of a good birthday ice cream party for the Marquis de Lafayette's Birthday. Providing umbrellas for the teachers and safety patrol, dropping off pumpkins for the neighbors; buying games for indoor recess; leading a Valentine's Day candy drive for the Construction Crew; securing a Party Bus for the Auction; bringing Shaved Ice Trucks to Field Day; the Lafayette Nats Presidents Race; a special thank-you reception for the Teachers at Macon; supporting the Six Flags Trip for the 5th Grade plus a special commemorative gift for each 5th Grader.

On behalf of the entire HSA membership, thank you to all the fun committee members for your hard work and your great ideas.

OUR 2015-2016 FUN COMMITTEE MEMBERS :Mary Ann Akers, Mary Ashley, Jennifer Bertsch, Courtney Corn, Vince Frillici, Rebecca Gordon, Stacey Fersko Grant, Kirsten Hoffstedt Keefe, Holly Idelson, Jordan Lloyd Bookey, Lisa Mitchell, Elllena Ochoa, Ellen Shurman, Bethann Siegel, Dennis Smyth, Adam Reisman, Ellen Root, and Darshana Venugopal. Plus HSA Fun Committee Liaisons: Janine Finck Boyle, Shannon Behm, Chris Lisi, Kristin Nicholson, Nedra Pickler, Stacy Beck, Jen Lanoff and Jenny Backus

Thanks to the incredible work done by this year's Fun Committee, the HSA has decided to continue the Fun committee next year, although with a slightly smaller budget. The HSA has allocated $10K to cover 4 big events or a series of smaller events for the 2016-2017 year.

We also want to welcome any graduating 5th graders to attend the meeting to speak on behalf of the team and to share any wisdom to the team for next year.

We look forward to seeing you there!

All the best,
Your XC and Track Coaches

Join the 2016-2017 Ways And Means Committee

It's been an amazing year here at Lafayette thanks to the support of our incredible parents. From the Homecoming Dance to the Auction to the Spring Fair and all the events in between, the community and school events you and your kids love and count on only happen because of our parents come together to make them happen.

The Lafayette HSA Ways and Means Committee works with parents to create, manage and design events and programs for Lafayette that support the HSA and all our great programs like art, music, mindfulness, sports and extracurricular events. Our philosophy on the Ways and Means Committee is to recruit a strong group of parents to chair each event and program that the HSA counts on for revenue and work to help our Ev
We Need You
ent and Program Chairs recruit a committee of parents to support them.  Each of the big events has a budget and a project revenue goal.

We are delighted to report we have recruited several event chairs already for 2016 -2017  but we still need more (especially for our Fall Events)  and we need subcommittee chairs for each event. We are especially committed to recruiting parents from the younger grades because many of our lead volunteers have older children and will be leaving the school soon.  If you are interested in helping on an event or chairing an event, please email Jenny Backus at [email protected]  or Astrid Ruggeri  at at [email protected] or email your Event Chairs directly. Some of these jobs are very short commitments in terms of time and organization, others take more legwork and volunteers. We can help you find the right job or assignment  and we can share our budget numbers and goals as well.

We will also be hosting a happy hour this summer for folks who are around and in town to talk about the Committee and the events we have planned for 2016-2017 on Tuesday July 12. Stay tuned for a Constant Contact with the exact place and time.  Adult beverages will be provided along with babysitting. Everyone is welcome - whether you are new to the school next year or a seasoned veteran. We will also recruit next year as well but for some of our events like Homecoming and Fall Festival, we need to get started soon.

We hope you consider joining the Ways and Means team and remember, you don't have to Chair an event to make a difference. We gladly welcome donations of time ( and money) of any size and all our Chairs would very much appreciate folks who can volunteer to work on their Committees and at their events. Don't hesitate to reach out to any one of us.
Thanks for your consideration

Looking For A Few Good Sponsors

Do you own a business or know someone locally who does? We are looking for 2016-2017 Lafayette HSA Sponsors. Contact Astrid Ruggeri at [email protected]. Lafayette sponsors help make all of our awesome Lafayette events happen. Sponsors receive free advertising on our website, Constant Contact emails and signage at our major events. Plus so much more.  Just this year our sponsors hosted special outdoor games at the Fall Festivaland Spring Fair, movie nights, special after hours shopping events, summer reading book sale, and the Wine Party to name just a few. We would love to work with you to customize a package that makes sense for your business.  There is a special benefit for Sponsors who sign up early so reach out today. Thanks for supporting Lafayette.

Babysitting Service: We are a group of responsible rising 7th grade girls at Sidwell Friends School neighborhood girls who are raising money for scholarships for a girl's high school in Kenya. If you hire us, we'll have two girls come to play and take care of your children. Our prices will vary, depending on what you think is reasonable, but all proceeds will go to the school.
We are pretty flexible with ages, but we would prefer to babysit kids who are at least three years or older. If you would like to hire us, please email [email protected]
You can also email one of our moms, Jen Lanoff, at [email protected] or call her at 202.744.4925, with any questions.
